the value of a crappy knife

Post by Yogimus »

I have a constant need of knives, and I tend to use them for everything that knives are NOT meant for. Namely, cutting wire, prying things, and general misuse.

I always see these knives for $99+, and I can never talk myself into buying them.

Nope, for me, it will always be the $10 PoS walmart special. Why? because I can actually USE it, without reservation. I don't CARE if the blade is made out of cheapo sheet metal, because I can use it to unscrew a license plate, pry open a can of corn, whatever I want, without constantly thinking "Damn thats a 99 dollar knife".

So here is to you, el cheapo knife... in a world of knives with "features", you buck the trend. For a buck.

you could buy a mini multi-tool and have much greater utility in a similar sized package

Which doesn't mean you have to pay more for your knife, just that things will be better and you will get better results all around.

I have a multitool. I just never take it anywhere for fear of losing it.

I used to carry a knife, a leatherman and mini maglight. The knife got clipped into the lighter pocket and the leatherman and flashlight were in a combo sheath.

Not anymore..

That's how many Swedes use Mora knifes. They get abused beyond belief, and still manage to keep some resemblance of an edge. And when there's no edge left, I've seen ordinary files used to get some kind of edge back. Those knifes are seen more as general "tools" than actual knifes, and a lot of people carry a second knife (which is also often a Mora) that they treat with proper care.

For general quick use it's a convenient tool to have around, and they're cheap enough to buy by the dozen and put anywhere you might need one. That way you never forget it when you need it.

Time for a group buy? I used to be able to get Mora knives cheap from a German insurance company (of all places - they put an advertising brand on them), but they don't sell them any more...

I checked Clas Ohlson, a Swedish company, and they sell a Mora Viking for €2.70/$4.00 each if you buy four or more. Four inch carbon steel, plastic handle and sheet.

I know another chain that mainly sells lumber that sell even cheaper knifes without the Mora brand for €1.08/$1.60 each. With a bit of googling I'm sure there's online stores that can match that. I suspect shipping them might cost more than the knifes though.

I'd go for a group buy of a Mora knife, or one of those Finnish Pukka (sp?), except I'm uncomfortable with the idea of not having some sort of anti-slip notch or guard in the handle.
I've been very happy with the Grohmann Canada Belt knife which is really nice that way, but of course, it is a really nice knife and I don't use it for rough or heavy work (for that I have an axe, assorted cheap screwdrivers and a banana knife with blades).

Aw, heck, if there is a group buy, I'm in!
The use of the word "but" usually indicates that everything preceding it in a sentence is a lie.
E.g.:
"I believe in Freedom of Speech, but". . .
"I support the Second Amendment, but". . .
