When you are very sick, and shivering pretty damn hard trying to get yourself warmed up, you can pull a hamstring muscle pretty bad. In the same leg with the metal in the knee. Ugh.....

If you're shivering that hard, perhaps now that you know what might happen when you do, you might want to consider putting an additional wrap (ACE or heat) on that leg, the one you pulled the hamstring (and yes, I know how much they can hurt).
POLITICIANS & DIAPERS NEED TO BE CHANGED OFTEN AND FOR THE SAME REASON
A person properly schooled in right and wrong is safe with any weapon. A person with no idea of good and evil is unsafe with a knitting needle, or the cap from a ballpoint pen.

Wrapped as I am typing this.
Just never heard of anybody ever pulling a muscle because of shivering. New datum to keep track of. Wonder if they go over that in cold weather training.

There is nothing more tedious than listening to someone drone on and on about how wonderful their new diet is. Especially the bits about how they, "no longer even want XXX and YYY" any more. Okay, so if you don't even think about eating that stuff, why are you talking about it?
WTF?
Don't get me wrong, good for them and all it is good for them, just don't expect me to care. My diet (also known as eating whatever I feel like eating) is of no interest to you for the same reason that yours is of no interest to me.

My ten year old Akita was diagnosed with bone cancer last summer and had a foreleg amputation in November.
She was doing great until New Year's when she stopped being able to stand... Xrays showed new malignancies in her spine and ribs.
We put her to sleep this week.
We loved that dog and she loved us.

Two seperate events.
Turned out it wasnt a burst brake line, but a popped brake cylinder. My luck held true to form, and instead of lasting to say.. TODAY,

So in the course of two days, i beat a speeding ticket, but the next day, i finished up the above brake issue.

The local yotes are getting frisky- they attacked the neighbor’s husky over the weekend and also took down a doe by the road.
They have been quite close to the house- I think I may be doing some yote hunting soon.

Last month I got a Christmas card from a roofing company addressed to the previous owner of my house. I contacted them, asking if they could tell me what they had done to the roof, and when they had done it. They never got back to me, and I had figured they weren't going to, until today they finally did. Turns out they put 20 year shingles on my roof, 20 years ago. Which was about what I would have guessed, based on the old leftover bundles of shingles I found in the shed I tore down. So I guess they didn't really tell me anything I didn't already know.

Tonight on my way into the Path train (subway between NYC and NJ) I saw a black (need I say African American?) Guy wearing a below the knee, bubble gum pink fur coat with a matching broad brim hat, and carrying (but not using) a walking stick.
He looked like a.pimp in a 1970s cop/action movie.
But not a good one like a Clint Eastwood movie, or even an OK one like a Jim Brown movie. A freaking bad one starring Fred Williamson.
If it was Halloween it would've been funny....

Can't find my respirator. Not sure if it got chucked prior to moving (with the plan for just getting a new one), or if it just hasn't surfaced yet. Kind of surprised I haven't run into (or needed) it prior to now. Probably don't need it for the current task, but gonna wait until I can get a new one although I was otherwise ready to proceed.

It's okay, it was getting pretty old. I ended up buying the same thing I use at work... Once a year they do a fit check with it on me.... I might ask if they will do my personal one I just bought at the same time since I think it's about that time again.

No doubt. And it was a freak show 30 years ago when I was in high school, and I had one particular friend who'd always want to go down there to try to have surreal experiences. Oh and be offered drugs.
Of course he was the same guy who we.... well we learned our lesson and only let him DM a D&D campaign *once*. He had this weird hard on for TAXATION. Enough that we came close to using the cluebat to explain what entertainment means.

Son just had his 6th birthday. I gave him a Barnett Bandit crossbow that shoots suction cup darts; his uncle gave him a little snow shovel, which I think was more of a hit, although he was disappointed he didn't get any more toy Alaska Airlines jets to expand and modernize his fleet with. He shot the crossbow once, hit the target, and went back to playing with his airplanes. His 3 year old sister, on the other hand, was all about the crossbow. I think I've got a shooter girl.

It's a bad time when you need vise grips to change a headlight. Very rusty screw wouldn't respond to anything else. I couldn't get hold of it from the front, so I got them on the back of the screw. Fortunately, the grips didn't bugger the threads. The ATF I'd put on to try to fake a penetrating oil made it come out quite easily once the grips got it moving, though.

Working through a contact at a supplier for a new part and the guy keeps calling me with questions. I do not mind making adjustments, but WTF. Keep telling him to mark up the drawing with what they want and I will change it, he keeps wanting to call me about every one individually. How does someone work like that, he must have nothing but time.

Maybe he has the attention span of a gnat.
I have guys call me about changes all the time. They want to describe it verbally and poorly over the phone. No. Mark it up on the drawings, and I'll look at it.
I had a contractor once calling me several times a day. At first, I said, "OK. Look on Sheet C3.2, Detail B. See where it says...?" After a few days, I told the secretary to take a message. I'd call him the next morning. By then, he'd gotten tired of waiting for me to call, and he'd actually read the plans.

I'm doing OK on 1-4, but I'm way behind on #5. Maybe I'll start naming them after friends' children.

Ingersoll-Rand apparently sold their construction equipment business to Korean company, Doosan.
I know that ag and construction parts are pricey anyway. Doosan has basically priced parts for older equipment stupid expensive in the hopes you'll give up and buy new.
I need three gaskets for an oil-cooler bypass assembly. They are cork and about the size of a deck of cards. Simple shapes.
Total is about $79 plus shipping.
Yeah i bought a sheet of rubberized cork gasket material and I'm cutting my own.

I need to replace one of the internally threaded fasteners on a piece of furniture. I didn't know they were referred to as "barrel bolts", "Chicago screws", and "sex bolts".

The Philly fans have the well deserved reputation of being the worst in the league - the kind of things that would have Millwall fans going "that's a bit much"

I was just dismissing it as a bad cold until the fever shot way up last night.
Swab test today confirmed influenza B. I'm covered in misery (if anyone recognizes the song). I'll be fine in a few days, but today.... I took a nap on the exam table while they were testing the swab.

Hit up a big open-air flea market and auction sale place in Sacramento today. Scored a Delta 11-990 12” drill press for $35. It runs fine, but needs a chuck. However, even after snagging an upgraded chuck and a new power switch, I’ve still got over $100 less invested than the used ones I’ve seen. Should really have taken a ‘before’ shot to document exactly how much grime I had to clean off the deck, but am still just stoked that I’ve finally got a decent drill press.

Be very careful, the strain this year is killing alot of seemingly healthy people, sometimes in hours, , due to secondary effects like cytokine storms. The minute you feel worse than the typical flu symptoms, get yourself to a hospital.

Anytime I start feeling the symptoms, I remove myself from the general population. Since I'm no longer in the rat race, I don't have an obligation to mingle with and infect co-workers.
I stay home, drink plenty of juice (and perhaps a little wine), eat sparingly, and get plenty of sleep.
Usually takes about a week. But, it works for me.
If I feel bad enough to go to the hospital, I usually feel bad enough to welcome death.

It's been a couple of months, at least, since I even looked for 22LR. I haven't seen any in Walmart in a couple of years, other than a recent "windfall" of some CCI subsonic. I did see a little on the shelves in the local Dick's, and some was behind the counter at Bass Pro. So yesterday, I stopped at Bass Pro for some other stuff, and saw a bunch of LR on the shelf, just out in the open, no limit posted. They had some CCI standard velocity, but none of the Mini-Mags I really wanted. So I bought my other stuff and left, slightly disappointed. Lo and behold, I walked in Walmart today, and they not only had several different types of LR, they had the elusive Mini-Mags. They only had 10 boxes, but no posted limit. I bought three, didn't want to blow the whole week's allowance.
I guess all the friends of employees must finally be stocked up. It's the first evidence I've seen that the shortage may finally be easing. I hope it doesn't get scarce again before I can scrape up some more cash.

Went to the Tucson Gem & Mineral show yesterday with my girlfriend. She has a business license, so we got in as buyers.
Scored a ring with 3, very deep purple, amethysts ( no occlusions at all). Got it for just over $200, regularly $1,100.00.
Had a chance to hold and look at a tray of diamonds. Probably just over 5 mill worth. Saw a pair of emeralds that I really wanted. They were one stone cut in two (bad crack). They were 3 carat each, perfectly clear, for only $500 a carat. Dang, they were nice.
Anybody ever wants some stones or jewels, let me know. Can get them pretty cheap during the gem show. It is the world's largest.

The local Walmart has had it for the last year or so but its in crook county so $0.01 tax per round. I choose not to pay the criminals running the county. Walmarts in the neighboring counties have been pretty bare. But Saturday I found 3 boxes of the Federal 36gr 550 rounds... in the clearance display for $17.99. Not too shabby, wish they had had more.

I am annoyed by consumer electronics that are still usable except for one minor part. Case in point: my emergency radio. It's a Grundig FR-200. I can't find a replacement for the emergency light. Sure, I have tons of other emergency lights and lanterns around the house for tornado season, but that's not the point. My extra extra extra extra wee little light doesn't work. It's an LED. It should be fine. The radio still works, thank goodness.

The LED is soldered in there with no identifying marks... de-soldering is easy enough. Finding a proper replacement is going to be tough.

Not really, measure the existing one to find a physical match, and pick something in the 250-500 milliwatt range. If you pick too low and it burns out, you simply go up a size in wattage.

I'll never understand how people define planning as "stocking up on food and water" and not actually learning some basics and fundamentals of sailing before embarking on these journeys.

Shit happens... There are plenty of people who do exactly what they did with as much experience, and succeed. Then on the other hand plenty of others who do have experience and do know what they are doing still manage to run into trouble, so I don't think the article contained sufficient data to conclude whether this was a result of inexperience or just one of those things. A guy could argue that they should have known that the shoals and channel shift around in the area where they got stuck, because obviously the locals know, but here's the thing... If you are sailing the world, most of the time you aren't going to have that local knowledge and you have to go by the best information you have in the form of charts, instrumentation, etc. Maybe there was a warning on the chart that they overlooked and maybe not. Not enough there to know without getting a copy of the chart they were using. Charts are not always right or up to date. Yeah, you should be aware of this, but it may be what you have to go on.
Also consider that the shipwwrecked couple are probably sailing experts compared to whoever wrote the article, and the writer's main goal is to generate traffic/readership more than to accurately convey facts.
The Gofundme is kind of lame, but plenty of long distance cruisers have "no income" or at least no regular income. Some do work that can be done long distance and/or at sea; others cruise until the money runs out and they stop to work for a while to rebuild their cruising fund. The current hip thing to do seems to be to document your experiences on Youtube, and get income from ads and Patreon. If you can get somebody to send you money because they find value in watching what you produce, why not? It's possible to live pretty cheaply while cruising if you stay out of marinas, and eat a lot of rice and fish, while depending on your sails rather than burning up expensive diesel. It's not like you are in a hurry.
Not having any boat (or airplane) insurance is pretty common... If you financed your boat then the lender is going to require it, but if you bought an old boat for cash and then fixed it up yourself, then having insurance may not really be worth what you pay for it. From what I have read, there are lots of exclusions on what they will cover. One common exclusion seems to be named storms... With many of those boats in the Caribbean that got whacked by one hurricane or another last season, even insured owners got exactly zero payout on their destroyed boats. I guess the rationale is you should be smart enough to not be in that region with your boat during hurricane season.
As for stocking up, that's just part of traveling on a boat for months at a time.
Again, not saying that these people are not idiots, I'm just not willing to assume that based on what was presented.

Last week I overheard a co-worker talking to a mechanic about his car, it was telling him his tire pressure was low and once before he had a bad sensor, which this mechanic replaced. He was complaining to them that they should replace it again for free since it's been less than a year since it was replace.
This morning I heard him tell another co-worker that he didn't need to go to the mechanic, he checked his pressure and it was low.
Ummm, isn't that kinda the FIRST thing you check when the idiot light goes on? I guess that's why they call it an idiot light.

Interview with the couple that lost their boat:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j7fLn5DItPw
Seems as though their biggest mistakes were buying a 50 year old, $5000 boat (hence the lack of insurance, because really why bother?) and maybe not having put enough into inspection or refitting, and then trying to enter an unfamiliar anchorage at night. The dude said he was motoring at about 2 knots in no-wind conditions, when they ran aground. What sunk the boat was the keel falling off... On a boat so old, no telling what kind of shape the bolts/joint were in. That's certainly something I would have wanted to check out, but then again the visible parts might not have looked so bad. They were pretty lucky it happened where it did and close to help, rather than offshore in bad weather.

Found a security issue at work today. Wasn't initially 100% sure it was real. Took it to my boss, who is actually technically strong in that area.
His reaction was "Hmmmmm. Shit, this is for real. Good catch."
Then, after a pause.... "You know you just made a lot of work for everyone, and they're all going to hate you now? "
We both laughed. I had a coughing fit (over the flu, still sick with evil respiratory crud). Good day at work.

Oldest daughter, youngest daughter, and I went to the range Saturday to get in some trigger time.
Oldest daughter thinks it both boring and cheating to shoot at 7 yards. She generally shoots at 10-15.
So, we went out to 25, put up some splatter targets, and shot for score. Little wretch outshot me. I'm both proud and chagrined.
We put up some small silhouettes, too. With no indication of where we were hitting, she won again. (/cursing).
I need to get new glasses, and go without her a bit to tune up, then try again.

I have mixed emotions about being out-shot by someone I've trained. On one hand, I REALLY hate to lose, at anything.
On the other hand, I must have done a stellar job of training them, if they can out-shoot me!

Re: Does not follow...
I thought the days of Sunoco blue being available at the pump outside of stations around tracks were long gone...
Apparently not - just found a station on rte 18 just outside sayreville that sells "260gt"(100 octane) just outside Sayreville.
Now to find some E85..

Okay, maybe I am stupid, but didn't they stop selling them a few years ago?
BTW - I am going to look at this move from some of the big box retailers against stocking ARs and such as a plus as that means the Mom and Pop places will have a competitive advantage and I think long term, we need those guys out there.
The law of unintended consequences and all that....

They're no loss really. The real thing to remember with them is getting "sporting goods" into the web adress. If you leave that off, be prepared...

That was my thought when I heard it. Plus, it may increase attendance at gun shows.

Re: Does not follow...
I always wanted a Pete 379, with a 3406b.
Of course, these jackstands aren't tall enough, or have a high enough rating for that, with it probably coming in around 20k lbs or so..

Re: Does not follow...
I don't think they put them in from the factory, but they're have been a few shoved onto show trucks.
Pete 359s with the big Kitty V8 was a factory option, was commonly used on logging trucks. Can be had cheap these days as California's new 2007 truck rule just put a bunch of these trucks up for sale, except outside of logging, there isn't much interest in them in the rest if the country.
Neither can hold a candle to C18 Cat, which can be had from the factory at 800hp, can get soft tuned to over a thousand with 20 minutes and a lap top, and can be turned all the way up 2500 HP on full on pulling trucks.

Re: Does not follow...
Heard "Wires" by Redfang on the radio coming home tonight, thank God for WSOU, it makes sitting in traffic semitolerable.
Found out yesterday that a former coworker who i lost touch with, is now out in california, helping run a grow op for a dispensary, and is probably making 4 times what i do now. Im in the wrong frigging business.
Still trying to find a decent 3/4 ton Burb' for a non insane price, and isnt friggin' WHITE. Its starting to turn into the old joke about the toothless nymphomaniac dwarf who owns a brewery.
Goign to go look at replacement dryers tomorrow, hopefully they can deliver on Monday.
I was all alone in my section of the building today, and my mind started wandering - you know what would have really saved Netflixs The Defenders? If in the middle of scene in the old Theater, where their all arguing, with prisoner tied up, and right before they come to blows, The Korean and his apprentice show up, and Stick and Sowande both recognizes them, And they both freak out.
You could explain it as CURE being the off the books wetworks division of SHIELD, with Nick Fury keeping his little pet murder machines out of view of both the world security council, and the Avengers. You could even use the angle that Chuin hates both the Hand, AND the masters of Kun Lun, seeing both groups as Thieves, and the former as competitors. Considering that Marvel has printed destroyer comics in the past, it might have been doable.

Re: Does not follow...
4th night in a row I’m up above 100.4* (typically hit a bit over 101, then take meds right before bed), and sleeping in quarantine in the guest room isn’t any fun. This morning was the first day I had to take meds in the morning to knock it back down, so I’m hoping this is progress(?) toward being over it. It’s not flu, or at least that’s what the docs at the AF medcen said after I got a nasal wash test done on Wednesday. Ugh.
