NOW, you have a cartridge....

Post by Steamforger »

I was at the local MoD today picking up powder. I grab 2 lbs every time I'm in the city. The guy behind the counter grabs me some W231 and IMR 4895.

He says "You usually get one or two 4895s. What are you using them in?"
I tell him "Mostly .308." and describe a couple of different loading methods I use depending on if I'm using components or beaking down and reloading surplus.

He then tells me a story of a local Russian guy that worked for Tula. He said the thing to do with 7.62x54R is to take 5 rounds. Pull the bullet from one, divide the powder into quarters, then add a quarter to each remaining round.

"NOW, you have a catridge."

I've seen some load data with IMR 4831 that uses 52.0 grains. Just spitballing a load I found on the intarwebs, 52 x 1.25 = a whopping 65 grains of powder.

Russians are certifiable.

I guess it would be hot, but I can't figure it would be good for accuracy.

You want accuracy, use h4350, or varget. They have the least variation in velocity due to temperature.

Ah, the max power reloading technique practiced by squirrel turd Glock owners.

Keep adding powder until it blows the gun up, then reduce by a tenth of a grain. :P

If it's Mosin food, it probably won't hurt it.

I'd not recommend that to anyone, ever, though.

In a Mosin, it'd bring that "Kills at one end, maims at the other." concept to a whole new level. Ow.
