I've never killed a dog, although I've outsmarted a few. I do know my brethren often cap them, though.

And, my dog likes chocolate. Doesn't seem to bother him a bit.

When I was young I had a dog that found a box of chocolates wrapped and under the Christmas tree. While we were gone, he opened it and ate them all, foil and all. He didn't seem to have any problems, but there was some concern as to problems when it came time to pass the foil, but everything came out all right.

Chocolate has quite a bit of a chemical that is similar to caffeine and effects dogs the same way caffeine does humans.

The problem is when a dog finds something like an Easter basket full of dark chocolate or something and gets a ton. Just like a human ODing on caffeine.

Had a Whitman's sampler wrapped up under the tree many moons ago. He chewed through the corner of the box and pulled out a handful and scoffed them. If he had any teeth today, I'm sure he'd do the same :)

The problem chemical is theobromine, and the more cocoa is involved in the product, the more dangerous it is. Dogs can't metabolize it fast enough to negate the toxicity.

If you suspect that your dog has gotten into some, and are seeing symptoms, this chart is helpful. http://www.petmd.com/dog/chocolate-toxicity

Don't feed your dog chocolate with macadamia nuts either. Made one of my in-laws dogs almost fatally sick.

Lots of stuff we eat is bad for dogs. Grapes/raisins for example, or onions.

When one of our dogs was a pup he managed to eat most of a box of raisin bran. Had to induce vomiting with peroxide, he was not a happy camper.
