Tannerite Question

The place for beginners, or anyone else, to talk about gun, gear, and shooting topics with a minimum of jargon and/or geekery. The only stupid question is the one you don't ask that blows up in your face later.

Tannerite Question

Post by AndytheAxe »

I'm taking my best friend out shooting for her first time for her birthday in a couple weeks and I was wondering how loud is tannerite? The farm we're shooting at is adjacent to a major highway and I'm trying to decide if I should order some for her to shoot or if it might cause someone to call the cops. (I'm in MD, a pretty GFW state) Also how big is the blast radius, the farthest we would be able to safely shoot it is about 50 yards, but we'll be doing most of our shooting at 25. (I say safely because it's the only direction with a backstop, the other directions are woods and I don't want to violate rule 4)

I've set off tannerite from 15-20 yards away with no indication I was at all unsafe. 50 would be fine for using the explosives to destroy something small. It is pretty loud, at a guess several times as loud as the rifle that sets it off, and is unmistakably an explosion. It is also perfectly legal in every state to blow something up, especially on private property with the permission of the property owner.

There's other reactive targets out there, including explosive ones. Heck, you can keep it as simple as balloons, or try filling plastic cups with flour. Water jugs are always good. Golf balls work too.

Here's another place to get binary reactive targets:

Like Tannerite, the amount of BOOM depends on how much agent you put into the target. With the smaller default True Shot targets it's not as immediately surprising as the Tannerite bottles:

go down to goodwill, buy some old stuffed animals... cut the seams in the back and pull out the stuffing... replace the stuffing with powdered sugar or flour... each medium sized animal will be good for at least a hundred rounds, and chicks love to see it.

The local rednecks here in NC with badges tend to frown on stuff that goes boom. Much less hassle to use flour.
