Cross Country Skiing

Been a loooonnng time since I did any x-country skiing. What is new? How best to get back into it, and introduce wife and son? Thinking of renting some gear; we're in Arizona, and I understand there is gear available to rent. HOWEVER, like most anything, is there anything that you would buy rather than rent? Pants, shoes, gaiters? What else? Thank you so much!
