optics for the F-class gun - prefer sub $1000

optics for the F-class gun - prefer sub $1000

Post by Precision »

I will be picking up the F-class gun soon.

I have a 4x16 x50 Vortex PST ffp that can be moved over to it, but that is a tad under glassed for 1000 yds and small targets.

I have been considering a Sightron SIII 8x32x56 (pretty sure that is SFP) or a 6x24x50 Vortex PST FFP.

I have a friend who is going to lend me a few options to play with in that range. A lucid 6x24x50, a Meopta 6x24x? and a Nightforce 5x25x56. In all likelihood I will like the nightforce the best, but I don't have $2000 for the optic.

Suggestions?

Practical or technical reasons why I should get a certain thing over another.

Is FFP needed for mostly known distance targets? I would assume not.

Does anyone have experience with Athlon optics?

One of the guys at my old gun range had one and paid $400 for an 8x32x50 and used it to win competitions. Seems kinda iffy for $400. Wondering what the trade offs are. less light transmission would be my guess and my eyes are not getting younger. The guy was mid 20's.

My suggestions run mostly waaay over your budget, one of which you listed.

I do think you're not selecting a high enough magnification.

If you can live with a fixed power, how about a Weaver t-36? There fairly popular with the budget BR crowd. Another option is a used Leupold 35x, new they're around 1100..

ok, So $1000 is not enough for good glass. Damn. Fixed 36x optics suck for target acquisition.

HTRN, it sounds like you are suggesting roughly 40x being the lowest end of the magnification spectrum?

How would one find used optics in this category and what would the expected discount from street or MSRP be for used glass? I would think one would pay no more than 50% of street price.

I might be able to get one of these at a deep discount. Is this adequate if not great?

1) Stay the fuck away from optics planet, they've got a horrible reputation.

2) If you're gonna spend that kinda money, spend a little more, and get the benchrest 42 power Nightforce, they're something like 1400 or so on midway, so you can probably do a bit better with some shopping around.

3) What do you plan to do about rings and mounts?

I wouldn't get it from Optics Planet. I have a possibility of getting that scope for less than $500 NIB. So $500 - 1400 is a big swing.

I don't mind spending the money so much as wanting to get a scope that still leaves me with room if I grow out of it, decide I like something else better and would have some use on other items I have / want.

I was probably gonna get a ring set from the guy you mentioned before.

Ballistic calculator says with a 200 yd base zero, there is only 25 MOA out to 1000 yds. So debating between a zero and a 10 MOA rail. Then it looks like Farrel has two different lines that might work. Not sure which to get. I am thinking the base that is thicker then add the low rise rings. Same height over barrel but more clearance for brass.

Thinking 10 moa version of this https://www.kenfarrell.com/index.php?ro ... uct_id=162

or the 10 moa version of this https://www.kenfarrell.com/index.php?ro ... uct_id=391

then these rings https://www.kenfarrell.com/index.php?ro ... uct_id=613 unless I need the mid heights

I will probably give him a call tomorrow and get them ordered as I am getting the gun in a week(ish) and it doesn't work without glass.

1) That's not the right mount for the f-class rifle, you need something for the target action.

2) 10 moa isnt enough imo, i personally would go with the 20 moa base.

3) i can't advise you on whether to buy the burris or not, because im not familiar with that model. Do take note - Burris has some real gems in their linup, as well as junk, so you should do some research before you buy.
