Now, if only I could find a retailer for S&G locks, with prices..

It seems like they go out of their way to not sell you their products. :x

Back on one of Kim's old sites/forums I had posted part of my discussion with a guy at S&G, including name and link to their site. I'll have to search my subscriptions and see if anyone quoted my response 'cause I thought I had some other info in there too.

EDIT (I thought you'd want the NY area):

Here's some info from their site:

Mike, those are all "Email us for a quote!" places. I don't want that(Hell, in that case, I'd try and deal with S&G directly) - I want a place that will list the price, and ideally, has an online store. I don't need the run around. I occasionally come across old safes(the last one was like 4000lbs and had double doors), and most of the time, the lock had seen better days. I'm tempted to grab the next one and use it for a gunsafe, but only if I can replace it with a new lock.

It looks like Clark Security Products allows online shopping, but you have to setup an account first.

there is a guy on THR that works for a company somewhere near TN that reclaims vaults and safes from businesses that go out of business...

he can get used vault doors for half the price of new ones.

+1 on being careful. The key to moving heavy stuff is finesse and leverage, and lots of clear thought. Don't try and grunt anything, nor try and rush anything, and be sure to have considered all possibilities of any actions before taking them.

Yeah, I remember him - I did a thread on "the forum that shall not be named" about a guy building a vault in his basement using a bankvault door, and linked to the thread about the same thing on THR.

I believe this is the website that was linked to as a reseller of vault doors.

The last time I bought a S&G group II combination lock (about a year ago), it was about $90 for the lock, dial, and ring. That was up from the $65 or so I used to pay back when I was building safes but still not unbearable. About $20-25 of it was the ring and dial. More or less depending on whether you want chrome, a key locking dial, etc.

As for setting the combination, it's quite simple. New locks used to come with the tool but you may have to buy it separately now. I don't recall if the last ones I got came with the tool. It's a simple matter of dialing the combination using the setting index (that other line on the front that's at about 11:00 o'clock), stopping on the last number, inserting the tool, unlocking the tumblers, dialing the new combination, relocking the tumblers and removing the tool. You do it all with the door open so even a major screw up is pretty easily recoverable. I've had to coach more than one customer over the phone after they botched resetting the combo on their safe. A nuisance but quite do-able.
