Garand Question

Post by scipioafricanus »

How can you tell the difference between one that is 30-06 and one that is 308?

(without doing a chamber mold casting)

Just try to chamber an empty 30.06 case. If it won't go in all the way, .308.

If the conversion was done by the U.S., you have what's referred to as a "Navy Garand". Several were converted to 7.62mm after the war for use aboard ships and for the Navy marksmanship team. The rifle will be marked "US Navy" and the receiver should also be stamped with "7.62". 3rd party conversions should also have a new chambering stamp, but that's not guaranteed. In either case, the well for the en bloc clip had to have a spacer inserted to keep the shorter 7.62mm rounds from sliding forward as the top round was stripped from the clip. The insert will prevent you from loading 30-06.
