1917 Enfield Question

Post by scipioafricanus »

Option to buy a 1917 Enfield... but it might have a non shooter marking.

U.S. Rifle Model M-1917 (P-14) .30-06 Bolt Action Rifle

Used rifle
- Excellent condition
- Rated @ 95°10
• Winchester manufactured.
The American Enfield
11 battle rifle.
• Used by American Expeditionary Forces during World War I.
• Parkerized finish, hardwood stock, open sights, 26" barrel and 6-round magazine.
• Winchester marked receiver with Remington marked barrel.
• Finish, stock and barrel are in excellent condition! Original cleaning kit in stock.
• Proof marks indicate that this rifle was assembled in July of 1918.
• Beautiful rifle! Stamped DP for "Drill Practice". A true piece of Great War history!
• Appraised value = $ 900.00 (A 100 year old piece of history!)

I am fairly certain that DP means "DON"T SHOOT."

Correct?

Yeah, pretty much. And 900 is really high for a wall hanger. http://forums.gunboards.com/archive/ind ... 69367.html

Are the DP stamps on the barrel / action or just on the stock? If it's just on the stock, and there are no obstructions in the chamber or bore you may be OK. A previous owner may have used a stock from a drill rifle to restore a shooter and didn't remove the DP stamp.

If the stamps are on the barrel or action then like Rod said, it's a wall-hanger.

Sold before I could ask questions about it. Hopefully, whoever bought it knows what they got.

I have heard lawyerly advice to the affect that old guns should be sold as non-guns for liability reasons. It could have been something like that vice any actual issue with the rifle.

FWIW my guess is that it was a DP rifle that someone rebarreled with a Remington '17 barrel to reactivate it.

After reading through Rod's link (or maybe a link from there), I wouldn't shoot a rifle that had DP anywhere on it. I'd just wait for another one to come along. Too many unknowns that probably wouldn't be obvious to the eye, or maybe even to a detailed examination.
Note to self: start reading sig lines. They're actually quite amusing. :D

I just started to poke through Rock Island Auction upcoming catalogue/auction. Some good choices there.
