Not sure, it appears to be an older alloy Winchester(?); if so that hole would be for the ejector spring, but I don't recall them being that large a diameter. And I don't think the action bars go back that far and they're lower in the receiver anyway. I think maybe a bit of legpulling. YMMV

I suppose I could pull my Defender out and take a look at it when I have time.
