Corrosion issue during storage

Post by Frankingun »

So, it looks like I gave my brother in law some bad advice. He had stored a camouflage finished turkey shotgun in a soft padded case, stored inside a StackOn plain steel cabinet that's in his garage. He has one of those moisture absorbing crystal things that you plug in to dry out, and he does claim he dries it out regularly. I told him that it was a bad idea to keep it in the padded case, as it could grab moisture and corrode the gun. He took it out of the case and put it back in the cabinet. That was two months ago, and he just took it out to sell it, and claims that it had some surface rust and the choke was frozen in place. He said he was able to get the choke out and regreased. So my question is, did I give him some bad advice on storage?

I would have to know what type of safe he used and what his cleaning schedule is

It's not a safe, just one of those uninsulated steel StackOn gun lockers. And I don't think his cleaning schedule even exists.

As much as I hate to agree with Yogi, he's right in this case.

The padded cloth cases can contribute to rust in a big way if there is trapped moisture. I did some clay shooting with a friend in light snowfall, left the gun cased overnight, and there was surface rust the next morning all over the gun. Oiled cloth took it all off, thankfully - didn't even need to break out the steel wool, but I about had a heard attack when I opened the case.
