GC fundraiser

Post by Combat Controller »

Ok, it that time of year for me to review what I am spending on stuff. The hosting and bandwidth here is not onerous but as the decision was made recently to make ourselves a 503c or some-such I think the first step will be to raise some cash for the legal work, hosting etc and once granted any money sent our way will be deductible and the whole sheebang will be audit-able by the users. Plus it will survive any abuses that however unlikely could occur. I could die in the fiery manner you are all expecting (and dare I say anticipating?) and right now it would be damn inconvenient. So in the interest of transparency and privacy of doners I suggest setting up a fund that for the the time being you contribute to and us admins will control to get this started if you are all agreeable. If this idea has traction I will get this underway. If you want to donate and not have your name show up just let me know and I will assign you a doner number and I will post the amount so you know and there is transparency etc and we don't end up with another debacle.

Thoughts? I presume y'all are fine with me handling this but if you want to nominate someone else that's cool too. Just make sure they are up for it first!

works for me.

A target amount would be a good thing to list. I will be in for some money, when we get the process in motion. Timing will determine the amount.

Works for me. I will second the idea of having a target amount posted when it is opened up for donations, with maybe a brief rundown of what it is for. And keep it fairly close to updated on how much has been collected. I realize that taking such measures is comparable to closing the barn door after the horse has already bolted, but given that we kind of got burned before, it's probably a good idea to err on the side of transparency.

Good idea guys. I will put together a budget. It won't be much but it adds up. I've put a bit over 2k into this site since it began just keeping the lights on. But it's also been a number of years.... So good value for money.

CC, no prob w you handling things - are any of us accountants?

I don't know that I have the time/expertise to set this up - but we have other brethren here who might be more suited to the work. (I do think we should hire anyone being used in their professional capacity, though - unless they wish to use it as pro bono work, etc)

I'm for it. I'll drop some money in the tip bucket with some thought to repaying CC a little bit back every year for what he's already spent. No fair to have him shoulder the whole burden.

Not a bad idea on the repay thing.

I'm in, let me know. I'd rather that the dunning notice come on the 1st of the month, though.

Can't do much, but I'll chip in too.
