Compact .45acp for CCW

Post by skb12172 »

There are some new entries in this class, including cheaper offerings from brands like Cobra. I'm currently looking at a Taurus, but there are also some interesting 1911 based offerings from Rock Island.

What is your take on the current available models, including the cheapos from brands like Cobra and SCCY?

Some of the members really like their XDS

I might get one myself, maybe...

I've switched to mostly pocket carrying my 327 SP101 as I can shot it better than my Rohrbaugh.

I can only speak to Glock and HundK .45 compacts. The Glock was good, but I won't ever be getting rid of the HundK. Even if I know I suck and they hate me....

I have never owned one but I have heard that one should only buy a Tarus if you like dealing repeatedly with customer service representatives.

1911 design is not meant to be shortened that much. Fucks up the timing. VERY picky about ammo. (From the scuttlebutt around the gunshop/smith)

I can't speak for all of their offerings, but I had one of their M9 clones for about 10 years and it functioned very well. It was on the whole probably better than the .gov M9's I've been issued. The magazines were not the same as the Berrettas though and that was annoying.

Taurus semi-autos, I know nothing about. I have owned a .38 snubbie and a .357 snubbie for over 20 years, each, with zero problems.

With the 1911 issues, does that mean if I went that route, I'd have to carry ball ammo only? It's .45acp, so it won't matter as much, but still...

Pretty much... I've got a great running full custom officers length, and its still pretty finicky about ammo.
Qouth for truth.
There are gunsmiths who can make a shortened 1911 run, but they're few and far between. Commander length is about as short as you want to go in the 1911 platform. Still, a Commander 1911 is a very concealable firearm. And, some of the Officer lengths run very well with the ammo they prefer.

An aluminum-framed, commander-length 1911 is just about perfect for CCW.

I prefer steel frame, but yeah, that's my go-to.
