AK stripper loaders

Post by Netpackrat »

Just a report on accessories that work, and that don't work.

So, I have a tool for loading AK mags from stripper clips, that was made by Pro-mag, and works very well. As eventually happens with all good products, Pro-mag discontinued it, so it isn't available any longer. The good news is there is at least one other manufacturer that makes it now, and I found a couple of online sources of them. I can't say whether these will work as well as the one I have, but there is no reason they shouldn't:

Cheaper than Dirt

Some other outfit

While the one I have works well, it is kind of bulky and takes up nearly the same space as a magazine. I wanted something lighter and smaller, that could be tossed into a bag with a bunch of loaded clips, and also in case my other loader breaks. I bought one of these from Midway, but they are available all over. It appears to be new production, and is stamped "China" on the side. It also doesn't work worth a shit. With much struggling, I was able to get one clip loaded into my test mag, but attempting to load the second and third clips were a total waste of time. As I was googling around today looking for info on the loader I have that actually works, I found comments to the effect that the Russians were never able to make one of these devices that worked reliably for 7.62x39, although they later perfected one for 5.45 Ak-74 mags.

Anyway, maybe this will save somebody here some trouble.

After seeing how well the UpLULA works on my pistol mags, i would have no qualms about ordering a LULA for the AK mags...

Ben, thanks for that link. And, I am aware of the LULA for AK mags, but they are slow compared to loading from strippers.

I saw those, but they are not available for the AK.

I've always figured 7.62x39 on stripper clips were primarily useful for a SKS. The AK mag LULA works great, get a rhythm going and you can load a bunch of mags in short order.
Life is short, ammo is expendable. Empty the mag.

Take a look at the Cammega site. Ibn addition to that speedloader mentioned, there's an AR mag on there that doesn't need any loaders. The 30 round one is 34 bucks and from the video clips, it sure looks like it works. Even after being shot with a shotgun or stomped with a sledgehammer. I don't have an AR, but if I did I think I'd buy those things.

I have a thing - somewhere - that is like a mag "cap" with a slot for the stripper. Just push 'em in, like loading an SKS.

Why all the complicated crap? This thing was made from stamped sheet-metal...

That sounds like the POS I bought from Midway that didn't work. Apparently there is some issue with loading 7.62x39 AK magazines from a standard (simple) stripper loader; the Russians tried to make it work for years and never did, but they solved the problem with the 5.45x39 AK-74. IOW, the complicated crap is used for the 47 because it is what works, in this particular case.
