Is there a 5.56 Brand you avoid?
I just got my first AR-15. Any brands of ammo I should avoid? Any that you really like?

Freedom Munitions (by reputation and a lot of comments)
Ultramax (the stuff I tried was dirty and noticeably inconsistent in power)

Pretty much all of them.

NPR beat me to it. I don't have or want a poodleshooter. Of course, now they are going to be banned, I will have to buy one, just because...
So, happy shooting and well wear your new AR-15!

anything steel case is a no go. It will eventually break the extractor and wear a divot into the feed ramp.
Most of the rest of the known brand ammo work just fine, some are much dirtier then others.
American Eagle is decent stuff
Federal is decent
I really like the Prvt Partisan stuff - great accuracy in all rifle I have shot it through

Wolf Gold, however, is made under contract in Taiwan (IIRC) and is nice range ammo. It is boxer primed, brass cased, no dirtier than other name brand 5.56 I've used and seems to shoot well.

Thanks to everyone else also for the suggestions.
In the .308 practice thread, DCAV5 stated he likes MEN ammo out of Germany in 7.62 NATO. Their 5.56 NATO is available for about 33 cents per round. Anyone shot it?

Haven't tried the 5.56 MEN myself, but it ought to be good stuff. I don't believe my one bad experience with their .308 is representative.John_in_Longview wrote:In the .308 practice thread, DCAV5 stated he likes MEN ammo out of Germany in 7.62 NATO. Can you get Swiss mil-surp 5.56 in the US? The commercial offering from the same plant is called Geco. Excellent stuff.
