rebated boat tails

Post by Precision »

Ok so help me out with this.

boat tails give you better long range performance vs flat based bullets. This is partially due to better rear aero dynamics and partially due (usually) to better front end aero dynamics / better ogive / better tip ...

now assuming all other things are equal, what difference will there be between a standard boat tail and a rebated boat tail.

here are the differences between a Hornady
.270 win 130 gr ballistic tip BTHP vs .270win 130 gr SP
..............vel / ME ....drop
muzzle.....3060 / 2702...-1.5 vs 3060/2702/ -1.5
100 yds...2854 / 2345...1.4...vs 2825/2304/1.4
200 yds...2651/2028 ...0 vs 2603/1955 / 0
300 yds...2460/1746 ...-6.3 vs 2391/1649/-6.6
400yds ...2277/1496 ...-18.5 vs 2188/1382/-19.3
500 yds ..2101.1275 ...-37.3 vs 1996/1150/-39.2

If not even having a boat tail (and having a soft point) only makes 2 inches difference at 500 yards, is there any point to rebated boat tails?

We are talking 5% greater retained velocity, 10 % more retained energy and 5% less drop at 500 yards.

It didn't seem to make any sense, but I don't have an aerospace engineering degree or anything to contradict all the stuff I saw while looking at swaging sites. But it sorta sounded like snake oils sales and then when I researched the above numbers...

Thanks

Dave and Richard Corbin are two of the best known names in bullet swaging... And they apparently don't get along. After their split, you'll note that Richard formed his own bullet swaging outfit, and doesn't promote the Rebated bullets..

And I don't think it's necessarily easier to make rebated boat tails than conventional ones. I do think it's probably easier to make the dies though.. ;)
HTRN, I would tell you that you are an evil fucker, but you probably get that a lot ~ Netpackrat
