Post by mekender »

why arent there any current auto loaders in .30-06?

is .308, .223 or 7.62x39 really that much better?

Remington also offers a 30-06 autoloader. It's not a bad little item, and is (or was) available in carbine versions as well.

Remington makes the 742 and the 7400 and the 740A, all semis in 30.06.

Russian American Armory Company shows the Saiga 100 on their website:

http://www.raacfirearms.com/Saiga_100.htm

It's available in .30-06, but only comes with a three round magazine--it's billed as a hunting rifle. It is an AK action, of course. Might be fun to dress up, though I wonder what a guy could use for high cap mags. I don't recall seeing the Saiga 100 advertised anywhere, though.

ETA: Here is an interesting write-up on the gun. Evidently they are or were available in the States.

Given the similarity between the .30-06 and .308 there isn't really any point.

so how much of a difference is there between the two?

perhaps the better question, why do they both exist if they are so similar?

The .308, or more properly 7.62x51, was a post WWII outgrowth of the .30-06 cartridge. It was discovered that by using new powders, performance similar to a .30-06 round could be had but in a shorter cartridge. This allowed the guns and magazines to be smaller and lighter and take less material to manufacture while still having that "Battle Rifle" performance.
