Fire Resistant Ammo Storage

Post by rightisright »

For a while, I've been contemplating getting something to store my ammo in that would give it some protection from fire. My main concern is if it all started cooking off, the firemen would high-tail it to the other side of the street and drink Bud while watching my house burn to the ground.

I considered getting another gun safe (which I am going to need for guns pretty soon, anyway), but didn't want to drop a large amount of cash.

So I cruised Craigslist for a few weeks looking for fire resistant file cabinets. I came across an old Remington Rand 4 drawer unit for $40. Sweet! It's wasn't in the greatest shape. It was painted flat black, had some dents in it and was missing the lock mechanism.

The interior and drawer faces are lined with about 1" of concrete. This thing is HEAVY. I'd estimate it at between 5-600#.

So, I took it home, hit it with a few cans of Rustoleum and patched the hole where the lock was and now it's happily housing ammo in my gun room.

That is nice. I wonder how it compares to the fire protection the safes have? Good idea and way to get the ball rolling on getting one. You have me interested in looking now.

I have that cabinet! Of course, my papers are in it.... Good call though.

Clearly you don't have enough ammo if your stash fits in a filling cabinet. ;-)

Seriously, ammo cans in the crawl space under my house is my "fire resistant" storage.

Hey, I'm working on that! Seriously though, the cabinet is now housing a lot of my practice ammo. My expensive defensive stuff is lining the floor and on the top shelf of my gun safe (which is stuffed to the gills).

I'm looking for another cabinet to hold the defensive ammo and free up some space in the safe.

Guys, seriously, if you have the land for it, build a small igloo. If you know how to lay block, you can build one real easy.

I do have the land and the block laying skills. However, I think my town's zoning department would shit a cow if put in an application for an ammo igloo.

Although, I guess I could call it a dry-aging beef bunker. :D
