IraqVeteran8888 did a good rundown, How Far Will A 12 Gauge Shotgun Kill?, over on youtube. He covers cut shells among other loads, interesting results:

The cut shells looked devastating. They would not cycle in the semi auto, though, he had to hand feed them. More on cut shells here:

Doc Russian had a report about the effects of bird shot at close range from his emergency room experience. Nasty. The bird shot was hard to remove and hard to find in the body. You could do more damage trying to get it all out. IIRC he said you plucked out the easy stuff and then watched for internal bleeding. IIRC some apparently died before they got to the emergency room from bleeding out.

The Sicilians mafia use barrel and stock cut down double barrel shot guns (lurpas) for hits. They'd pour candle wax on top of bird shot and refold the tops of the shells.

Interestingly, in the second vid the guy shows how he cuts shells--he cuts rather deep, but does it in a shallow spiral--that way the upper and lower parts of the shells remain connected when the cuts (never) overlap.

If the goblin made it to the Emergency Room the round didn't do it's job.
