I got a Lansky Puck sharpening stone from Amazon the other day. It's intended for doing axe blades, lawnmower blades and tools. Basically a great big round pill shaped two sided stone (coarse and medium). I tried it on that big Bowie blade I made a few years ago, using it to shape the edge, and dang, that thing works! Very handy tool for $7.99.

Instructions say to move it in circular strokes, but I just did straight strokes along the edge. Works better than a file.

My Scoutmaster had one of those. Very handy, easy to use, put a nice edge on our axes. I don't know how it happened, but his were noticeably dished from use on the axes, which made it kind of problematic for sharpening knives.

First stone I ever used was similar to that. Dad kept one in the kitchen (edges weren't beveled so dramatically).
