We cut up crane cables and rigging every freaking day (I work in a steel mill), and I can probably come up with more 1+ inch wire rope than you'd want to fool with, if we can sort out the shipping. (Right now, I know where there's 30 feet of 1.5 inch carbon steel wire rope that's in "relocatable" status.)

I just had a brainwave. A really good mate of mine back in the UK ( the guy I was teaching gunsmithing to ) - his missis works for Europes largest service agent for Detroit Diesel.
They are always shipping heavy parts around between the US and Europe, I'll see if they can help out somehow.

Are you thinking about pounding out a connecting rod or even pounding down and reshaping a PISTON? 8-) ;) ;)

If that's the case, I'd *PROBABLY* go with the connecting rod, as it is designed to handle more stress (other than compression impact from compression-space explosion or even detonation [pinging]) along it's long axis than the actual piston. I can only imagine it has AWESOME structural properties along the whole thing for ease (as cost-saving) of manufacturing.
