Articles 4 and 5 of the NATO convention -
Under Article 4, any member state can convene a meeting of NATO members to "consult" when it feels its independence or security are threatened. In practice, it has rarely been used and sends a strong political symbol to the greater world that NATO is concerned about a particular situation.

Article 5 is known as the "one-for-all and all-for-one" article, the keystone of NATO as an organization. It states that an "armed attack" against one member is an attack against all and sets in motion the possibility of collective self-defense.

However, it only commits members to "assist the party or parties so attacked" and to take "such action as it deems necessary, including the use of armed force…." It does not automatically result in military action.

Just throwing this out there since France did kick ISIS around a bit today in Syria with some jet fighters and a few bombs........
With France getting kicked in the nuts twice this year already, has to have a few of the French PTB at least considering this avenue, especially since Hollande declared "War" on ISIS. Hmmm....

Guess the French just delivered a big "Fuck YOU!" to ISIS.

Well, the French probably have a better chance of invoking Article 5 successfully than Poland or Lithuania would, but I'm still not sure it's the way to bet. The rot is bone-deep, it says here.

I just got hold of the first volume of Pournelle's There Will Be War, which I bought specifically to read James Warner Bellah's "Spanish Man's Grave."

The lessons of that story are applicable here, but they won't be applied here. The French airstrikes aren't nothing, but they aren't what is called for.

You can't bomb people back to the stone age when they are only a few years removed from it. They aren't going to notice.

This is false. Blow up someone's 3 year old, murder their wives and goats, and they tend to notice.

Screw getting them to notice.
If someone wants to send a message, they should use Western Union.

Bomb them back to the cemetery age.
No one will miss them, and when the last two goat-humping doofuses notice they're dead, their absence will be mourned worldwide as was smallpox.
The last contribution they made to world society was the zero, and they've done nothing more for 15 centuries or so, coupled with bringing to the world table a mean IQ of around 70, and an absolute inability to coexist with anyone anymore, nor even with themselves.

Civilization needs them like it needs a dose of shingles.

The stragglers we miss can either adapt, or die off quietly somewhere else.

It's not like Western society hasn't been patient. But I say after 500+ years of trying it the other way, it's time to clear them away and let the rest of the world get on with itself. It would just be civilization giving itself an enema.

The wives and kids will be written off as "Inshallah", but whacking their goats is really gonna piss them off.

The same people that use their children and women to carry suicide bombs... You are right about the goats though, they would care about that.

Well, yeah. Wives and kids cost money. Goats MAKE money.
