Anybody want in on the pool?

Post by Aesop »

On how long until we see US helos evacuating Maliki and a few advisers from the roof of the Baghdad embassy?

Mosul falls to ISIS jihadis, Baghdad dithers

Nice to know a trillion$$$ or so, a few thousand American lives, and ten years of war weren't all a big flippin' waste of time.

Next time we go back*, it needs to be exclusively via B-52. After that, Iraq should only be a problem to those who live downwind of the fallout.

*(The ISIS jihadis are from the same wellspring of brotherly love and peaceful coexistence we went into Afghanistan to root out in 2002, right after 9/11. Going back is therefore not an "if". It's a "when". Sleep tight, America. My only other words of wisdom are for AirCombatCommand: when you see a plane headed for D.C. next time, let that one get by you.)

Of course, everyone has the answer. "It's Bush's fault." I give it until Sunday Noon.
one can be a Democrat, or one can choose to be an American.

I had really thought that given the chance of democracy, the Iraqi people would stand up and take ownership. The same in Afghanistan. Either that assertion was wrong, or Islamic fascism is simply winning.

I think Aesop is correct, it's going to mean either we exterminate all that proclaim jihad, or we just waste our time, money, and lives. That's a pretty scary thought, until one realizes the jihadists have already proclaimed it's us or them with no middle ground. Mankind is it's own worst enemy. We don't need a meteor to end all life as we know it, we're willing to do it ourselves, thank you very much.

The Kurds seem to be making the most of the situation.

Now finally, maybe, the Islamists in Iraq can be fought on the terms they needed to be fought on all along. No more Marquis of Queensbury. It'll be ugly but the Kurds are about to begin conducting seminars for any who would care to learn.

If I had a son, I would donate his services to the Kurds in exchange form ensuring that he is trained to be a real man.

actually, I think we should resurrect the Reagan era arms shipments and set the Kurds up militarily, then convince the jihadi's that the Kurds are vulnerable to assault. Grab some popcorn and watch the fun.

Friends, what we think of as “democracy” is simply not possible there — not in any real sense, not beyond going through the merest show of the thing. Why? Because the center of the culture is the religion, because the center of the religion is a book, the Quran, because the speaker in that book is almost entirely Allah – God Almighty, Himself – because the book, which is to say, “God,” lays out complete rules for life, society and moral conduct that are, thusly, the unimpeachable, unmodifiable, unchangeable COMMAND OF GOD. Given that, what the hell is there to vote about? Beyond whether Chalabi or somebody else was going to be the official Thief-in-Chief, I mean.
Go read the rest of what Tom Kratman had to say on the subject.
The avalanche has already started. It is too late for the pebbles to vote.

My guess is the Kurds will be happy to be rich, and independent - and, it gives Turkey the option to offer their Kurdish dissidents an opportunity to move to a nation of their own.
