Amazon Apparently Contemplating Leaving Seattle

Post by Jered »

They call it "expanding elsewhere."

Cities hoping to host Amazon's second corporate headquarters have until Thursday to submit their bids. More than 50 jurisdictions have jumped at the opportunity already, promising increasingly extravagant incentives to the e-commerce company.
Fuck Seattle.
The avalanche has already started. It is too late for the pebbles to vote.

El Paso is "trying" to get them to come here. Highest property taxes in the state, poorly educated population, rank corruption in city and county government. Yeah, I don' think so Lucy.

Chicago is "trying" to get them to come here. Highest property taxes in the state, poorly educated population, rank corruption in city and county government.

So they can buy anything they need here, setting principles aside, so Chicago has a chance.

But they got Boeing to move here through massive tax incentives (and likely less visible... ahem... considerations) and the rise of a corporate schmuck who hated "rural" America to leadership and had 'big city' engraved on his brain. And he then spent more time schmoozing with other CEOs and not a whole lot worrying about the company he was nominally responsible for.

Tucson as thrown its hat in the ring to get Amazon to come here.

A couple of San Diego's cities are also vying for the opportunity to host the new headquarters!! I know Chula Vista has a bid in, and the city of San Diego also has a bid in, and I've heard others are still formulating how to beat the others with their bid. This IS a BIG DEAL!! I don't blame them at all for trying!!

they're not saying they're leaving are they? The way Amazon is growing and buying into adjacent markets (like the Whole Foods acquisition), they've got to have some room to grow and maybe have divisions in the company concentrated in markets that they can afford to build out and hire into.

As it is now, working for Amazon as a young coder means paying $3400 a month to rent a repurposed Folgers can along Lake Union.

You're right, I don't think they're looking to move, they want to have an additional "Headquarters" and possible distribution center - which could mean up to 50,000 jobs (or so I've heard) - which is why so many places are fighting so hard for the new Amazon office.

Yeah, what I've heard locally is "2nd HQ". Ohio has a couple of regions putting in their bids.

Let's hope they move to what is already a solidly blue, thoruoughly messed up state already. Wherever they go, the employee base they draw will have a significant effect as voters.
