I know. I lived next door to it, from 82-89. I've walked through it, at least skirting the edges, and where I lived the only way to get *anywhere* at all except by boat was to pass through East New York.
My dad still lives there, so whenever I would visit I would get at least some of the East New York experience.
People in Howard Beach may or may not be racist, but the way they are infamous for reacting is a perfectly legitimate response to always having yutes from some of the East New York projects coming down across the Belt to steal their shit.
Oh and still processing the 'gentrified Bushwick' concept. I rode the Canarsie line to school every day from 83-89 (sometimes on the way home I'd go another longer way just to, you know, not take the Canarsie line) and I always ranked the stops by degree of the murder hazard should I get off there. (Made for interesting conversation with my friend who lived near the Livonia Ave stop. To quote "never get off here, they would murder you".) The Bushwick ones were way up there. Transit Police were at risk of being murdered if they got off there.
Maybe we're just jaded, but your villainy is not particularly impressive. -Ennesby
