I do know that jeans were a highly sought-after item on the Soviet black market, but I believe that was mostly in the 1980s, not sure about the '70s. So I'm not sure if bellbottoms were undermining communism or not.

I did some work with the USAF Soviet Awarness Team in the 80's. Part of their duties was regular trips to the USSR.

The always packed an abundance of two things: Blue Jeans and American Toilet Paper. They once hired a cab for a week with a few sets of jeans and a package of TP.
