Crazy Landing

Post by tfbncc »

OK, It's been a couple of decades, but I seem to recall from my flying days in Uncle Sam's Canoe Club that the runway is generally supposed to be straight. It's not supposed to look like a long par 5 dogleg on the back nine at Pebble Beach. And check out the approach "When you get to the bend in the river, make a hard right and yer home free. Mind the trees."

And don't forget to fullscreen this vid to get the full effect.

Um. Damn. Methinks I'd request some arboreal work get done on that approach, but mebbe' that's just me. That'd be a helluva ride if you've never flown in there before. Yeah. Damn.

If he were to lose an engine flying that close to treetops and terrain, it's likely he'd be proper F-ed. Runways don't have to be straight, but it sure helps. You only have so much rudder steering authority on the ground, and only so much differential braking you can do on the ground to help. Prop beta helps as well, but as you lose aileron authority you better be slow enough you aren't going to tip the airplane as you turn. As for takeoff, once you get enough airspeed you can lift one wing to help turn, but by that point it's better to get both wheels off and accelerate in ground effect. There are lots of mountain airstrips similar to this with sloped runways, and whole courses devoted to mountain flying.
