Ancaps are delusional.

I have David Friedman's book 'The Machinery of Freedom'. It's by a *very* bright guy, and I've seen ancaps describe it as about the best condensed argument for their philosophy you can find.

The first couple of chapters are actually good. But I had to put it down. In the section on dealing with crime/law enforcement/contract enforcement/courts, the handwaving got so bad it became incoherent. Because ancaps are fundamentally incapable of constructing any system that administers punishment. By their own system of definitions, anything capable of administering punishment is a government.

The section on national defense is where I just couldn't continue.

Yeah, at the end of the day they basically seem to all be saying "you know, I'd really like to live in a country where the biggest insurance company is the government."

I found this quote in a thread on the topic.

"Given the enormous waste in all wars and defense preparations in all countries throughout history, it is certainly not beyond the bounds of reason to propose that private, voluntary defense efforts would be far more efficient than government boondoggles. Certainly these efforts would be infinitely more moral."

Bottom line, they don't give a shit if it works, only that's it's "moral". They also ways use the highly defenseable United States as an example and never deal with the effect going anarcho would have on a country like Poland.

It really shouldn't have surprised anyone what happened to Incandescent and Inflammable at Jutland.

I found the comic posted elsewhere in a thread where that was being discussed. I thought the humor stood well enough on its own to just repost the image here. :D

Whether or not the originator thinks it's funny, they should have realized it would probably be used by antis at some point, which makes it stupid. This of course assumes somebody on the anti side figures out why it's stupid... but one must assume anything one produces will be used against one's cause.

Re: The Federalist.

They said (my emphasis):
Trump was able to convince rural and working-class people that he was the answer to their collective malaise. Economic anxiety, which Never Trumpers are so wont to point out as the reason for his success, is intimately tied to cultural issues, because the anxiety is seen as a product of unfair cultural decline. You didn’t lose your job because your skill set didn’t match a changing economic reality. Instead, it was the result of a rigged system that benefits the elite, liberal urban centers on each coast and their progressively government-dependent constituents, at your expense.

In a less polarized environment, that schtick might be seen for the nonsense that it is.

I don't know. My civil engineering shop shut down because there was no money for projects because of the financial meltdown cause by elite bankers (none of them went to jail) and who benefited hugely from the Commodity Futures Modernization Act and the Community Reinvestment Act. Maybe also my skill set didn't match changing economic reality. But I think the second thing was there, too.
Note to self: start reading sig lines. They're actually quite amusing. :D

Not sure why the image quality sucks when I load it as an attachment.... It looks fine when opened on my computer. I'd host it on my server but it's bigger than the limits that so and so set.
