"Aircraft windshields" covers a lot of ground. The windshield of a typical light aircraft is nothing more than plain acrylic (plexiglas), formed to shape. There are indeed special cleaners and you need to take pains to ensure that they don't get scratched. Jet airliners like the one in question use a laminated glass windshield, which also contains a heating element to prevent it from icing up. We clean them with nothing more than isopropyl alcohol mixed 50% with water, and a rag.

Ah, true enough. My wife's son flies Gulfstream 5's among other things in the 89th. I seem to recall him saying they were a bit pricey if not treated right.

What NPR said. We had an aerosol can of special glass cleaner we used at the Fargo Jet Center to make sure we didn't scratch them. I saw a few business jets come by with placards installed by the owners between the window and glareshield saying "DO NOT CLEAN WINDSHIELD" I'm guessing because either they had special requirements or had previously had them damaged by well intentioned line folks.

As I enjoy reminding folks who're scared of flying, in a modern jet you're traveling at roughly about the same speed as a bullet from a .45 ACP. I'm amazed the damage wasn't worse.

Oh, the damage to their egos was quite significant.

But that's what happens when you fly THROUGH the thunderstorm.

Bad weather has killed more single engine aircraft than just about anything else. Ultra light pilots who take off on gusty, windy days seem to get hurt/dead a lot.
FTA recommends that you fly your aircraft to a safe area if a bad storm is coming. I've always had bit of reserve about that 'cause what if it is moving faster that the weather nerds say it is or it picks up over ground speed while you are trying to get to safety.
I like the idea of folding wings and a hurricane proof bunker. Regular hangers are about like trail parks for airplanes.

My uncle was among the aircraft owners who lost their planes at ORL due to hurricane Charley... He did not fly it all that often so he did not mind taking the insurance check for it.
