Desert Island - Novels you'd take

Post by Weetabix »

Same desert island. The books are weatherproof. Your kindle fell in the sea. What ten novels would you take to pass the time?

1. The Emerald Illusion, Ronald Bass
2, Pride and Prejudice, Austen
3. The Hobbit, Tolkien
4. Kim, Rudyard Kipling (or The Jungle Books or Puck of Pook's Hill, not sure)
5. Starship Troopers, Heinlein
6. Moon Is a Harsh Mistress, Heinlein
7. Clear and Present Danger, Clancy
8. Rainbow Six, Clancy
9. Battlefield Earth, Hubbard
10. Ender's Game, Card
11. The Stand, King

(so, sue me :P )

Your Kindle fell in the sea, heh. :)

1. The Lord of the Rings, J.R.R. Tolkien (Tolkien intended for it to be a single work, and I'm claiming it that way, nyah :P )
2. The Hobbit, J.R.R. Tolkien
3. The Winds of War, Herman Wouk
4. War and Remembrance, Herman Wouk
5. Anna Karenina, Leo Tolstoy
6. War and Peace, Leo Tolstoy
7. Shogun, James Clavell
8. Chesapeake, James Michener
9. A Tale of Two Cities, Charles Dickens
10. The Illuminatus! Trilogy, Robert Shea and Robert Anton Wilson (double nyah and Hail Eris! )

Ha! Nice pre-empt.
There must be an end to this intimidation by those who come to this great country, but reject its culture.

Wow, this would be really hard. There are several authors I'd have to have *something* by, but choosing a single particular book would be rough.

Shakespeare - at least one tragedy, one comedy. Maybe King Lear and Twelfth Night.

Gordon Dickson - whatever collection includes the novella 'Things Which are Caesar's'.

Keith Laumer - maybe The Long Twilight, or Galactic Odyssey, or Dinosaur Beach. Or any story collection that contains 'The Last Command'.

Poul Anderson - maybe Hrolf Kraki's Saga, or Three Hearts and Three Lions. Or any story collections that include 'No Truce With Kings' and 'Cold Victory'.

Glen Cook - maybe Sweet Silver Blues or The Black Company.

David Drake - maybe Northworld (it's been released as one volume with all 3 novels), or Redliners.

Fred Saberhagen - Empire of the East (it's been released as one volume)

Terry Pratchett - probably Night Watch.

Lois McMaster Bujold - at the very least Shards of Honor, ideally an omnibus with several others

John Steakley - Armor.

Neil Stephenson - Cryptonomicon.

Annnnd, I think I've run over already.

The complete works of Shakespeare can be had in one volume. I missed that thought (and Shakespeare himself). Might work for others as well. ;)
