So, is it the Brit equivalent of Tabasco Sauce?
No, it is more like a cross between A-1 and Heinz 57

I used to watch a UK TV series on the public TV channel called "Chef" about a Black Englishman trained as a classical French Chef running his own French resturanant. In one episode, IIRC, he had to be absent from resturant and the better assistant chefs were out of pocket also. This left it up to the most dofus trainee to keep things running. He stepped up to the plate and the customers really liked the results. When the Chef got back he asked him how he did it. He whipped out a bottle of HP "Brown" sauce. He had added a bit to every dish he'd made.

It's not hot, it's spicy. Very difficult to explain. Email me for a care package ;)
Ah, it has flavor. Is that allowed in Brit food? Wouldn't sprinkling that on Brit food make the food shrivel and disappear, like sprinkling water on the wicked witch of the west?

(Anyway, it's odd how difficult it is to get across the difference between heat and flavor sometimes.)

Edit: Just checked, the stuff is readily available on Amazon and qualifies for free shipping on $25+ orders.

There actually is good food in England... I think they got their reputation from an era when they were still eating "peasant" food - stuff most of the US* had abandoned long ago.

*Not the cajuns. Cajuns still eat absolutely anything... Almost... The ones I knew wouldn't eat raccoon... But there may, or may not have been a vulture being roasted in an oven at one point in our association...

The episode you're thinking of is, IIRC, "Rice and Peas".

The only ethnic group that tops the Cajuns for "equal opportunity eaters" are the Chinese - they'll eat anything that moves, and a few that don't.

Not just the Chinese, many of the Asian nations are that way... I have heard many stories.
