Truly gritty

Post by blackeagle603 »

The son & heir started his pre-cruise block leave tonight. We decided to call it guys night out and went to see True Grit. It was with some fear and trepidation that I waited for the movie to start. How could they not disappoint?

They. Did. Not.

Worth seeing on a big screen. They held more closely to the book than the original movie. The period dialogue was most excellent.

Almost went to see it last night, but made the mistake of taking my shoes off when I got home. Oh, well, I'll get there.

I don't know if I'll ever be able to think of anyone buy John Wayne playing that role - perhaps I'll change my mind if I see it, but it's pretty hard to unseat The Duke.

Yeah, I sat there watching preview with serious misgivings about anyone else in that role. Wondering if I'd be bugged throughout thinking about the bucks I spent and the running comparison in my mind.

This isn't the era for stylized westerns and caricatures of old west lawmen. Hence the post title (above).

Let's just say [strike]BB[/strike] JB did it different and well. If I hadn't seen him in Crazy Heart I prolly wouldn't have paid to see this movie.

That'd be Jeff not Beau in the lead role. ;)

Went with The Boss to see it tonight, and was actually pretty impressed. JB didn't do a bad job, although trying to fill The Duke's boots is a pretty serious task. Actually though Matt Damon did a better job than Glen Campbell did in the original (as an actor, GC was a pretty good guitar player). And the little girl who played Mattie Ross was outstanding!

Conclusion: I'll buy the DVD when it comes out, because I'd watch it again. Just not right after watching the original.

I caught the original on TCM last night. During the intro speial I found out something interesting, the movie was made as a response to High Noon. Appearently, JW felt a western sheriff wouldn't be running around town begging for help from townfolk. He'd do what needed done, with what he had on hand.

I do believe it was Rio Bravo which was John Wayne's answer to High Noon:
High Noon debate
The film was made as a response to High Noon, which is sometimes thought to be an allegory for blacklisting in Hollywood, as well as a critique of McCarthyism, according to Graham.[4] Wayne teamed up with director Howard Hawks to tell the story his way. In Rio Bravo, Chance is surrounded by allies—a deputy recovering from alcoholism (Dude), a young gunfighter (Colorado), an old man (Stumpy), a Mexican innkeeper (Pedro Gonzalez-Gonzalez), his wife (Estelita Rodriguez), and an attractive young woman—and repeatedly turns down aid from anyone he doesn't think is capable of helping him, though in the final shootout they come to help him anyway. "Who'll turn up next?" Wayne asks amid the gunfire, to which Colorado replies: "Maybe the girl with another flower pot."

Rio Bravo was the film on right after True Grit on TCM last night, trust me--I was watching both of them.

I thought that was El Dorado? John Wayne, Robert Mitchum, and James Caan.
