Why? Lot's of family overseas and spotty cell coverage inside our house.

Thanks for the roundup Chris. I've been meaning to but I'm just a bit stuck on which of those 6 hardware paths to take. I'm reluctant to leave a PC running all the time. I'm getting killed in the top tier electrical rate as it is. However, running with existing phone jacks is indeed appealing.

Maybe just bite the bullet and run a couple new internal phone lines in parallel from the PC...

Add option 7?

Just get a Wifi Skype phone like this? Take it with you and use wherever there's Wi-Fi.

Doesn't satisfy the multiple handsets on same line in a house problem though.

Once 'net reliability got to an acceptable point (it was horribly bad for a long time - we're at the outer limits of their network) I switched to the cable-company's phone service and have been very satisfied.

Why are you so unhappy with your cable-co's offering?

i worked for the cable company for years... the MTA's are horribly unreliable and tend to go bad quite often... problem is, you cant just go to the CSR counter and get a new one, they require you to have a tech come out... that means that i go without internet for a day or two... no thanks
I've had ZERO trouble with mine (knock wood) -- perhaps the tech has improved since you worked with it?

My biggest sticking point was "all my eggs in one basket." When the Cable/Internet's out, I still had a phone line and thus a dial-up option so I could still work... When my phone went out for the third time in less than a month, and my Telco told me it would be almost a week to get a tech out AGAIN, I just about LOST it on them. I called my Cable Co, and my line was installed 2 days later.

To add insult to injury, I got a "we'll do almost anything to get you back" letter from the Telco -- inviting me to call and tell them why I left and give them a chance to win back my business.

I called, and told them EXACTLY how they lost my business, but I think we all agreed they had no chance of winning me back.

So let's get serious about this VoIP/Skype thing...

Looking for words to the wise from more experienced hands.

Two app's:
1. For the home.
I want to be able to operate without a PC running. I'm looking at the DVG 2001Sto get my home's hardwired phones running on Skype. Any red flags with this unit? Or better choices to recommend?

2. Mobile use of a WiFi phone.
Thinking I can test fly one around town and at work and see if it can reduce my cellular minutes. Might be app's there for the family. Esp for the son&heir at college next year. If it works as advertised imagine living on campus and not having wheels he could probably do fine without a cell phone.

Seems like the Belkin and Netgear WiFi phones are running about $140. Not seeing any others under a $100 yet. Need to dig further. If there's a better value out there I'd appreciate a clue.

Downloaded Skype software. Quick and easy.

Stopped at Frye's on the way home (yeah, I know -- blech) and picked up an IPEVO USB handset.

Did the find friends thing and then searched on family and a couple friend's last names. In the middle of that got pinged by my sis-in-law in Camiri Bolivia. Didn't even have the handset plugged in yet. IM'd a couple times told them to hang on. Plugged in handset and it immediately was available. Picked up and wound up talking with her and my big bro' for a good 30 minutes or so -- clear as a bell and FREE!

Yee-hah.

Next up to show up was my "brother by another mother" a missionary from our church in rural Jamaica. Another great conversation -- and timely. He's got some new stuff on his plate that needs our attention back home and I was on my way to Elders/Pastors meeting.

Then when I came home late after meeting up popped another conversation cross town with a guy a church who showed as "online." He's been doing planning/budget for a main pwr panel upgrade in our main hall. I'm his contact pt but we've been missing each other the past couple weeks/too busy to coordinate next phase. Got that pump reprimed...

Yeah. Skype works.

Gotta get that Skype enabled router and then maybe a WiFi handset too.
