Windows 10

Post by Rod »

Keep getting alerts about Windows 10 and wondering if anyone's done it. Any problems? Can you revert back to Windows 8? From what I understand, it's going to be forced on users in a few days.

You'll have the option to upgrade free for up to 1 year I believe. I'd normally hold off until the first SP, but I stand to gain some from the reported benefits of DX12. I really could do with the end of IE also :)

From what I hear, it's stable, and faster than Win7, which is really the OS it's being compared to. Less of that touch screeny-crap too.

Need to migrate my current setup to a bigger SSD in the next few days though, before I can switch. Win7 is great, but Win10 is the writing on the wall for it.

So I should grit it out with my current 5+ year old laptop (Win7, and runs slower than unionized .gov workers) until they come out with SP1 for Win 10?

I have been playing with the pre-release versions for months and it is stable and a decent OS... I expect that all of my machines will be upgraded by the end of the week.

Well the memory compression algo's seem to work. It is smoother and faster than 8.1. It is a bit more intuitive.

I'm hearing there's a security concern having to do with wifi and sharing. Here's some sites for information about problems.
Link1

Link 2 talks about wifi password sharing, Item 7

Father-in-law is looking at the upgrade and the automatic WiFi [strike]security breach[/strike] password sharing was stopping him big time.

Apparently you can disable it, AFTER the OS is installed and it's spammed your contacts with your security set up.

I offered to lend him an old router, set its alias to FUCKMICROSOFT, password to RustyChainsaw!11! and use it to do the download and set up.

Once it's set up, disable the security breach and switch back to his regular router.

I have FBI Surveillance Vehicle 11287 and one named NSA Data Collection Point 33XXX.

Upgraded at about 6am today... So far so good, the only problem I had was that one of the motherboard apps (not a driver) was not compatible so I got a funky error message. Uninstalling it was all that I needed to do.

Overall I am very pleased with how smooth the process was.
