Wireless adapter to pair with Asus RT-AC66R Router?

Post by Malthorn »

My wireless router is starting to act up so I was at best buy today looking at routers. I remembered this thread and was looking at the rt-n66r when I noticed the rt-ac66r was on sale for $20 more than the n66r. I grabbed the ac66r. Now I'm wondering what wireless adapter to pair up with the new router. Any recommendations?

Well, what are your needs in terms of an adapter?

Laptop or desktop?

Distance involved?

That looks like a hella good router by the way, I have the older N56U and LOVE it.

It will be for my desktop which currently uses a early generation N pci adapter. My needs are internet, online gaming and video streaming. Distance is about 25 feet.

I picked up a Linksys AC1200 usb adapter for my laptop. I may be imagining it but it seems that HD video streamed to it is playing back better and with less buffering. I'm not imagining the increased signal strength over the wrt54g that I replaced. Even my Nexus 4 is connecting before I get to the driveway. Before it would barely get a signal in the driveway.

My general rule is to use wires for desktops so I cant really comment.

A 25-foot Cat6 Ethernet cable will cost less than a wireless adapter, and be more reliable and faster. The above is not particularly cheap as cables go. It does have good reviews. In my setup, I use a shorter cable and have the router closer to the desktop machine. I NEVER buy cables from Best Buy, or even Walmart, unless it's an emergency(computer is down, or network is down, and I have urgent WORK to do). I find one can order from Amazon, pay overnight shipping, and still almost always beat the price of one just across the street in a brick-and-mortar store. I also avoid using wireless for gaming, it's just not as fast. I need all the network speed I can get to compensate for my lack of gaming skill.

Cables are basically a ripoff at Best Buy - not just Ethernet, but all cables.

A good go to place to buy cables is Monoprice(who among other things, sells bulk cable), and Blue Jeans Cable(Blue Jeans is sorta a sanely priced Monster cable..).
