My free Norton trial just ran out and I'm now using AVG on a trial basis. Is there anything free and/or cheaper out there that will work as well as buying one of these two?

Yep, what Chris said. My BIL is a tech professional and his advise mirrors Chris's. I've been using Microsft Security Essentials for two years with nary a problem.

I use the MS suite built into windows 8 and I use Avast
