Sebastian Loeb Smashes Pikes Peak Hill Climb Record

Post by Darrell »

I've been waiting for the vid to come out... well, here it is, over at Top Gear UK's site:

http://sundayafternoonclub.blogs.topgea ... ak-record/

He beat last year's record run by a minute and a half or more; Peugeot brought a 208 with 875 kg weight and 875 hp. Heck, that's F1 territory. The road is now paved to the top, unlike the good ol' days when it was gravel, as hill climbs should be. The f'in' Sierra Club sued because the gravel was impinging on some trees and fish or such, and they forced paving the entire road.

I'd like to see the Top Gear crew cover the race--it'd be too much to hope to see Jeremy Clarkson go off the high side at the Bottomless Pit. :P

Wow. That's some hellacious driving.

I remember watching it many times when it was gravel and most of the turns didn't have a guard rail. I was always amazed at the maniacs drifting the car's ass-end almost over the edge.

As a contrast, here's the classic Climb Dance, featuring Ari Vatanen doing it old school, on gravel, and with an honest to God clutch and shift lever:

Holy crap! I'd'a soiled me panties a time or three!

Should have taped an AR mag to his hood and told the cops he had one illegally... I bet he would have been faster.
