Omigosh! Knock me over with a feather, boys - I just got my first ever repeater contact on ham radio! I was using the VX-5 I bought from Chris.
It took me two hours of fiddling with the HT user manual, a repeater directory, and I nearly sacrificed a goat, but WOO-HOOOO!
I was on 145.420, an open repeater in Hemet, CA and WD6ECH answered back. I don't think I screwed anything up too badly, either! I am just floating on air.

And may I say, from a moral point of view, I think there can be no justification for shoving snack cakes up your action.

Re: First ham radio repeater contact ever!
Now Saturday be watching/listening for N7PXD on the 147.030 machine on Mt. Palomar.
Since you had the manual out and were fiddling with the buttons and knobs, the particulars are 147.030, +, 103.5 tone. For the non-Hams out there this translates to a receive frequency of 147.030 MHz. A transmit offset of +.600 MHz or 147.630. And a sub-audible tone of 103.5 Hz to activate the repeater.
The machine is owned & operated by the East County Repeater Association. It has great coverage over much of San Diego county and further north. Depending on your exact topography, you may be able to reach it from your residence.
Lastly, Ham Radio operation is NOT restricted by the cell-phone hands free regulations, but be very careful none the less while driving.

OK, Rump. I'll be on that repeater as soon that day as I can, and will follow it all the way in.Rumpshot wrote:Now Saturday be watching/listening for N7PXD on the 147.030 machine on Mt. Palomar.

Rump, I don't know if you're going to catch this before I get to S.D. tonight, but I'm leaving in 45min (2:15pm PST).
I'll be on that East County Repeater all the way down discussed previously in this thread.
As well, I wanted to tell you about a new repeater I just found, which you may be able to hit from where you are in El Cajon, or on the way back home. It's 147.975, (-), 146.2 in Menifee.
It's owned by Menifee Office of Emergency Management, call sign K6OEM.

Handled this radio at tonight's meetup. That is a nifty little unit. I would have much rather carried one of those in my vest than a PRC-90 back in the day. Even if I had to keep it in a ziploc it'd probably still have been more reliable.
