Leaving, on a jet plane...

Post by Dedicated_Dad »

Hi all.

The Boy's having trouble, and now wants me there YESTERDAY. I'm not at all clear on what's happening - I will post more as I figure this out.

We've found a surprisingly cheap last-minute flight, so for now I'm just going to grab the one-way ticket and worry about getting home later. I can't even begin to guess when I might be coming home, so I have no way to guess about a return date.

A couple of folks e-mailed and offered miles - if the offer still stands I'd be very grateful if you'd e-mail me to dedicated_dad at yahoo dot com with details of airline or whatever and contact info. I'll reciprocate with my info.

I have a Dr. appt in the AM and plan to leave right after and catch the earliest possible flight, so if you don't get a response, please bear with me...

DD, you still have PayPal hooked up to that email address, right? You still have my phone numbers? What about contact info for blackeagle603? Have you got a place to stay lined up? Unfortunately, our spare truck isn't registered or I'd let you borrow it while you're here.

Yeah, I still have PP but honestly right now we're more than fine - the flight was only $120. I'll ask if I get worried, but for now we're FINE cash-wise. [ETA:While I'm on the topic, you're going to offend me if you don't cash that check. I'll feel better knowing I kept my word, and will GIVE you my word I won't hesitate to ask for a loan if I need it. CASH THE !)@#& CHECK! (please!)]

I'm sure I have numbers, but it would help if you'd e-mail 'em again to save me a few CPU cycles.

I just e-mailed B.E. I expect to be able to stay at The Boy's place, but he's so drugged right now I just can't be sure, so I contacted B,E, just in case. I might need an air-mattress but otherwise I'm sure I'll figure SOMETHING out...

I'll be able to use The Boy's 4-runner.

As I said to BE in my e-mail, I'm again humbled by the generosity of such great people. I'm looking forward to being able to raise a glass with you guys...

AA will let me check-bag a pistol, but I don't want to get in trouble with CA. I haven't yet decided what to bring, are there any problems with CA law and:

P3AT
Seecamp .32
KT Sub2k
Sig 226?

I'm inclined to bring a pocket-pistol and the carbine/sig combo if such won't be a problem in CA...

Thanks for all!!

First off, CA has NO CCW reciprocity, so if you don't have a CA-issued CCW permit and you're not an active or retired cop, you can't legally CCW here. We also have seriously F'ED UP laws for transporting a concealable firearm (due to all the gang action).

To avoid any possible problems, keep the firearms and ammunition COMPLETELY separate, one or the other in the trunk, but not both together in the trunk unless one is in a locked container.

The only reasonable option for you to be armed in CA is to open carry UNLOADED (but your mags CAN be loaded and they must be plainly visible as well as the firearm). FlintlockTom would be your best source for all things open carry in San Diego. Obviously, doing so on the base (Balboa Naval Hospital) is a SERIOUS no-no.

If you're thinking of open carry, let your carry holsters be your guide to what you want to bring. Other than the ranges, we don't have many other areas to shoot around here. I'd like to say we can go down to the border and shoot at some criminals smuggling drugs across, but someone might get upset.

Is the KT Sub2k an "assault weapon" under CA law? If so, I wouldn't bring it:
(a) Notwithstanding Section 12276, "assault weapon" shall
also mean any of the following:
(1) A semiautomatic, centerfire rifle that has the capacity to
accept a detachable magazine and any one of the following:
(A) A pistol grip that protrudes conspicuously beneath the action
of the weapon.
(B) A thumbhole stock.
(C) A folding or telescoping stock.
(D) A grenade launcher or flare launcher.
(E) A flash suppressor.
(F) A forward pistol grip.
(2) A semiautomatic, centerfire rifle that has a fixed magazine
with the capacity to accept more than 10 rounds.
(3) A semiautomatic, centerfire rifle that has an overall length
of less than 30 inches.
(4) A semiautomatic pistol that has the capacity to accept a
detachable magazine and any one of the following:
(A) A threaded barrel, capable of accepting a flash suppressor,
forward handgrip, or silencer.
(B) A second handgrip.
(C) A shroud that is attached to, or partially or completely
encircles, the barrel that allows the bearer to fire the weapon
without burning his or her hand, except a slide that encloses the
barrel.
(D) The capacity to accept a detachable magazine at some location
outside of the pistol grip.
(5) A semiautomatic pistol with a fixed magazine that has the
capacity to accept more than 10 rounds.
(6) A semiautomatic shotgun that has both of the following:
(A) A folding or telescoping stock.
(B) A pistol grip that protrudes conspicuously beneath the action
of the weapon, thumbhole stock, or vertical handgrip.
(7) A semiautomatic shotgun that has the ability to accept a
detachable magazine.
(8) Any shotgun with a revolving cylinder.
I'm looking forward to meeting you.

I know - no reciprocity... my state is almost as bad... I will have a steel lock-box and would NEVER think of putting a pocket pistol in my pocket if Nanny said no-no... ;) I'll probably just end up with the P3AT but... Too scattered to think straight, just wanted to make sure nothing on the list was "banned in CA"...

Oh, for those who care...

Surg. #1 was to put in all the HW and fix the bones
#2 was fasciotomy due to excessive pressure in muscle compartments
#3 was to close 1 of o2 fasciotomy incisions - apparently they also cut out some dead muscle
He's to go tomorrow for #4, and seems to have no idea why.

They're doing a poor job of managing his pain - he's apparently had a couple of really bad days and spent hours screaming in pain with no response. His girlfriend and roommates have tried to advocate for him, but get dismissed as they're not "family." They also have jobs and other stuff to do, and none of them have any real medical knowledge of what's happening.

He also apparently got combative with them coming out of the last surgery and is worried about that and all sorts of other things, and he's too drugged up to remember what they tell him. They tried removing his catheter but had to reinsert it as he found it impossible to relieve himself.

His house is a wreck - he came home from deployment and dumped all his filthy stuff in his room then got hurt the next day. He's had a bout with MRSA on the ship, and the LAST thing he needs is to come home to filth. Of course he's going to need care after going home as well.

Bottom line: The Boy needs an advocate, he needs some help, and I'm the person best equipped to take care of him. His Father's reacted in his usual narcissistic fashion, but even he agrees he couldn't be much more than a spectator. I've lived it, studied it, and know more about it than even most of the non-MD hospital staff...

I'm a bit scattered right now but will be better once I get packed and prepped....

Thanks all again - gotta run.

Make SURE you bring enough meds to cover your own needs, and then some in case you wind up staying longer than you planned. Also, notify your doctor/pharmacist to let them know in case your meds run out/get stolen/get destroyed and you need a refill wired to a local pharmacy here.

Don't forget to take care of YOURSELF too. If you go in the tank, you're not going to be ANY good to your boy!

DD - review the "assault weapon" stuff I added to my previous post.

Yup - appt in the AM is with the pain-doc. THAT's going to be a problem if I'm there more than ~30 days. I plan to ask for a double-stack and call the ins. co. but if that won't work then... I don't know. We'll see.

in re: Sub2k - hard to believe a pistol-caliber carbine that's disabled when folded (opens at the breech) is an "assault weapon" but... there it is. Pistol-grip+mag="aw"

I guess Kali really IS worse than here...

Well - I'm all packed. Up at 7AM, to Doc, then on the road to the big-city airport. Arrive SD @ ~7:30 PM. I plan to call Mike and BlackEagle when I land, but will be going straight to Balboa... Any input on reasonable cab-fare appreciated so I don't get screwed TOO bad... Once I manage to hook up with the boy, his GF and his roommate I'll have more info on accomodations - they'll have to take me to get his truck when they kick us all out at ~9:30PM... I'm hoping to be able to stay at his place, he also mentioned some sort of Navy housing for family but... he's stoned. If the latter is an option that would probably be best, as it's right there, but... I just don't know right now and won't until I get there.

Thanks for everything, guys - sorry I'm so scattered and confused... I fully expected to end up going out, but figured it would be next week sometime when they decided to send him home. When I called him today and offered again, he hung up from me and called Mom crying, begging her to put me on a red-eye. Of course, he'll probably have forgotten it all by the time I get there, but it's pretty damn clear that he needs an advocate with the knowledge, attitude and the "parental authority" to be sure he gets what he needs... This will be good for all of us...

Thanks again!

DD,
BE, Flintlock Tom, and Mike are not the only ones keeping an eye on you. They may be the "front line", but don't hesitate to keep the rest of us abreast of the situation.

My contacts in San Diego are fading away. I spent 16 years in the area, but left town about 13 years ago and things have changed.

One thing that I doubt has changed is Balboa. It is a premier hospital. I spent much too much time there for very minor problems. Not their fault, just the way things worked out. Never an over nite stay, but did undergo a sleep study once. And a very, very early morning for an MRI.

I will be in the area, Ramona - Julian area, the first, second and third of May. If you are caught up on the "sitting, cleaning, cooking, etc" duties, plan a day trip Friday or Saturday to visit me at Rendezvous. Flintlock Tom may be there that weekend too. BE and others have visited in the past.
