Pouring again... Will it ever stop?

Post by mekender »

So the wife is doing well, which is a good thing...

Just before she had her stroke, on the 15th of last month, we got notice from the landlord that she did not want to renew the lease for next year... Makes sense, we are paying below the rate in the area by a good $300+ a month. Ok, no biggie, I have a job that ends on the 1st of July and am supposed to start a new one on the 5th, so by the end of July I will have a good $5k or so to be able to move with.

And then, while my wife is in the hospital, I speak with the recruiter for my new job and they have pushed it back to a start date of the 18th. Well crap, that means instead of getting 3 paychecks in hand before the end of July, I only get one... So last week, I lay it out to my landlord, that basically we do not have any money to move with until at least August and preferably September.

Today she replies: "I really understand your situation, and really would love to do something about it, but unfortunately I have some situations that preventing me to do so."

Well fuck...

So here I am with about $1k to my name, a good $800 in bills due in the next couple of weeks, and about to be homeless... Moving will cost a minimum of $5k. First month's rent and deposit will be at least $3k in any place we can find in the area. Plus $500 to $1000 in deposits and such to move to a new place. Plus a good $500 to $1000 to move and that assumes we do it ourselves, me with my hurt back and my wife who just got out of the hospital with a stroke a week ago.

At this point, the only idea I can come up with is to force the landlord to evict us and drag out the process for a month or two so we can save up enough to move.

Sigh... I just can't seem to get ahead...

I understand that feeling. I hate to suggest it, but we've had to use a credit card in that situation where we were cash strapped, and then pay it off over the next few months. I hate paying interest, but when you don't have much other choice...

Only credit card I have is a $750 limit and it is nearly maxed out... My credit is destroyed after almost 4 years of being unemployed for 4+ months out of each year.

Could always try calling the CC company and see if they would raise your limit.

Do you have any money in a 401k? Many plans allow you to take a loan without tax penalties and pay yourself back the interest.

Nope, the last 401k I had was depleted within the 6 months following my being let go from Microsoft, 5 years ago... I have not been able to get any form of savings or retirement funds started since.

Does your landlord have an option for you to stay by increasing rent? Or is it a done deal?
If it's a done deal, might as well force her to evict you. Could take months for that, and she collects nothing during that time.

Oh it is a done deal... She rejected my request exactly a week after my wife got out of the hospital for a stroke knowing full well that it happened, that has got to be one of the most cold things I have ever had someone do to me.
