A few bricks, some brush overhead as a sun screen, a stump or two, and you're set...

As for the old bikes - couldn't you rent a space in someone's barn, garage or outbuilding for a bit?

Perhaps go in "halfsies" with the owners of the old heep and someone to pay for the parts?

(Or, if you can find them, you might be able to make some money sending them back to the US - I know a shop which does restoration work in Austin, TX.)

Two issues with the 'paleo smithing' - one is containing sparks that might cause a fire ( it's tinder dry here for about half the year and the vegetation burns like crazy when it catches - we collect it in summer to use as firelighters in winter, it's better than anything man made )
Second is I'd need a building anyway to put the grinders in.

I've just spent a couple of hours exploring the idea of building the shifters from aluminium castings. That would save a lot of time. The main problem is making the green molding sand - but I have found out that certain types of cat litter are made from bentonite, which is the ingredient I couldn't previously find a source for. I'll have to make a ball mill to crush the bentonite into a fine powder but I wanted one of those anyway, for reasons which are obvious if you know what other things a ball mill can be used for...
I can run the forge inside the traditional outside paella oven and it'll easily melt aluminium.
So that looks promising...

I was only telling half the story about restoring classic bikes. I have a friend here, another expat, who has a building I could use and has offered to put all the money up. He's retired, mechanically minded, got some money spare and really bored.
Both our wives want us to do it.
But I'm very reluctant to go into business with a friend, or with anyone else for that matter. I know I can work with him but I don't want to risk his money ( even though the economics are sound, and it isn't much of a risk )

Did you watch Tubal Cain's video in making an Al mold for lead hammers?

It was quite fascinating

Cars I'm not so sure about. One thing is having the space to work on them and the second is paint. Restoring a classic vehicle makes little short term economic sense if you have to farm jobs out to specialists. I can't do bodywork and paint on a car.

When it comes to restoring a bike I can do everything myself.

There is a 'Mille Miglia' style road rally for classic Italian bikes called the Moto Giro, which is driving prices way up and it's what I should be cashing in on.

And you could go around collecting over-used wood & metal files from businesses (so when you're ready, you ALREADY have a good stock of blank to work from) to turn them into high-quality knives with minimal expendature in materials and workmanship (kinda' like Anza Knives here in El Cajon (where I go to the factory and buy their seconds/blems at FAR REDUCED prices). And let me tell you, those things keep their edges like crazy!! They can stay razor sharp (depen1ding on use) for much longer than just about anything else I have (besides my thin-bladed kitchen knives, but you can't hack a branch with a thin-bladed kitchen knife)!!

This will help you to quickly raise additional funds so you can get your furnace and tools to make your OWN BRAND of blades!!!!
POLITICIANS & DIAPERS NEED TO BE CHANGED OFTEN AND FOR THE SAME REASON

A person properly schooled in right and wrong is safe with any weapon. A person with no idea of good and evil is unsafe with a knitting needle, or the cap from a ballpoint pen.

I remain pessimistic given the way BATF and the anti gun crowd have become tape worms in the guts of the Republic. - toad
