Any graphics fellows on the board?

Post by Aglifter »

I want a, rather simple, design knocked up for my personal card - and my marketing folks are now having to be shared with "Megacorp", which means things like this get knocked so far down on priority, that it won't happen.

I can't help but if you don't find someone here, I have followed the design contest forum on Namepros, a domaining website, with interest. Some interesting designs have been generated; if you check older topics you can see if they would meet your needs.

And there are always 'pro' places like 99designs (not a recommendation, just a name I heard commercials for).

Personal card? You mean a business card?

No, it's a quirk of mine. I have personal cards made, at times.

Right, so a card with your non-work info on it so that you can give it out just like you would a work related business card?

Yes. Usually just a name, personal email and personal phone number.

As I recall, a true "calling card" is nothing more than a name - the era of needing those is long-past, however.

For many years in the Army, it was considered polite to leave a card when calling on senior commanders at their quarters. There would normally be a small table near the door, with a dish for depositing the cards. There was also a tradition of calling on the brigade commander on New Year's Day. Dress blues for the gentlemen, and appropriate attire for the ladies. I remember one such New Year's Day, the adjutant had published a schedule and yours truly was the first on the list. I was to appear at his front door, with my lady, promptly at 1300 hours, to depart no later than 1315. The entire command structure would arrive at 5 minute intervals, be polite, leave a card, but leave after 15 minutes.

So, as ordered, I appeared, with my lady, promptly at 1300 hours. Col Bridges came to the front door of his quarters, dressed in flip-flops, grey running shorts, and a tee shirt. He looked at me and my lady and exclaimed, "Oh, shit, Is it New Years Day?" My lady and I looked at each other, wide-eyed, while the Old Man started barking orders. In just a few minutes, I had shed my uniform jacket and was setting up his barbeque pit while my lady helped his lady in the kitchen, making a huge pot of chili. The second officer to arrive was dispatched for beer.

By the time the third officer had arrived, he was pressed into service with me over the grill. Hot dogs, hamburgers, and etc to go with the chili the ladies were preparing. We also moved the Colonel's TV to the patio, so he could watch the game (you'll remember that college bowl game were played on New Year's Day.).

In those days a company had 6 officers, a battalion about 30, a brigade about 120. Over the next several hours, we ate chili dogs, drank the Old Man's beer, and watched football. Along about dark, we kinda-sorta-formed-up, and marched down to the Commanding General's quarters to serenade the General with Auld Lang Syne. It was quite a party, but nothing like the traditional formal calling protocol described in the Officer's Guide. But, then, Colonel Bridges was a cavalry officer, and we had our own traditions.

Spooks can be like that, too. There's custom and tradition, and then there's the way WE do it, which may not even bear a passing resemblance to custom and tradition.

The more subtle the shade of off-white, and the more modern the typeface, the better.
'Regulate' used to mean the opposite of 'constipate.'
