Google executive admits gun don’t kill people, people do!

The place for beginners, or anyone else, to talk about gun, gear, and shooting topics with a minimum of jargon and/or geekery. The only stupid question is the one you don't ask that blows up in your face later.

Google executive admits gun don’t kill people
I nearly fell out of my seat when I read this. From the an article at The Age (emphasis mine):
In January, John Hanke, the director in charge of Google Earth and Google Maps, hit back at the claims, saying terrorists would still carry out their attacks with or without Google’s help.

“I don’t really think it’s tipping the balance in favour of the bad guys,” Hanke said.

“The evilness is in the philosophies and the desires of those that want to do evil. They will use the tools at hand to do that, whether it’s throwing a Molotov cocktail, or shooting a rifle or using some piece of technology as part of the process.“
Wow! I had to read it twice just to make sure it was not mis-reading it. Google has taken a very dim view on gun related websites in the past. For example, Google advertisements are banned on websites selling firearms.

This actually is the perfect example of “XYZ don’t kill people, people kill people”. Most people love Google Earth and Google Maps, and they love them despite the fact that they are probably used by terrorists planning attacks.

There is currently a debate in the UK about Google Earth showing a top secret nuke submarine base. It sounds to me like there is a bureaucratic problem where government workers don’t want to / can’t pass on military base coordinates to Google, but on the other hand don’t want the images showing up.
There is a certain type of mentality that thinks if you make certain inanimate objects illegal their criminal misuse will disappear!

And the resolution is only getting better. Search for Polyarny on google earth someday and play "Count the Kilos". There's currently a picture of a boomer as well as some abandoned boats towed to a small inlet on the northern side of the channel. I won't even mention any of our stuff, but it's all out there to see.

Pick your base of choice. Chances are, there's decent resolution of something "interesting".

As a landscape architect student, I find it to be an invaluable tool. Import my image into AutoCAd, scale it, and start tracing the important lines. Gives me a CAD file of an area I'm looking at from scratch in a couple of hours. It also works incredibly well with SketchUp.

Edited to add- There are two brit boomers in plain view in the base mentioned in the article and a barn that looks like it could house at least another.

Fun fact: At one time there were scrambled areas around the DC area. I cant find them at the moment, but they may still be there. I still want my Earth from Snow Crash.

last i looked, the whitehouse was scrambled out... as are a few other public places in DC... there are also SEVERAL places in the nation where the resolution will not get clear, and these are places that i know for a fact have interesting things to see.

it wasnt but a year or so ago that one of the map birds showed the uncovered 7 bladed crew of an Ohio class sub in drydock... heads rolled over that one i am sure

here is the pic

Perhaps they're looking for new sources of ad revenue in these tough times. The following is a screen capture from a local political commentary blog called Sound Politics. Check out the Google ad in the lower right corner.

The Google exec just said that because it was his ox being gored. If he had been speaking about any other industry losing income he would concentrate on the element of facilitation such tools provide.

Interesting about those sub pens. Maybe they need some of the camouflage coastal defense factories had in WW2, like Douglas Aircraft Company. Two-foot tall renditions of residential neighborhoods, anyone?
The use of the word "but" usually indicates that everything preceding it in a sentence is a lie.
E.g.:
"I believe in Freedom of Speech, but". . .
"I support the Second Amendment, but". . .
