Home/self defense guns for waifs?

The place for beginners, or anyone else, to talk about gun, gear, and shooting topics with a minimum of jargon and/or geekery. The only stupid question is the one you don't ask that blows up in your face later.

Home/self defense guns for waifs?

Post by Cybrludite »

A friend of mine is coming along on my Super Bowl Sunday Shützenfest to learn the very basics about firearms for self defense. No problem, done this before. The hang up is what to suggest for home defense and CCW for a lady who is five feet tall in heels, and 95lbs if soaking wet... with mercury. (Exaggerating, but not by very much... She still gets carded at the movies for PG-13 flicks.) Her fiance is also a bit on the small side, but not nearly to the same extent. I'm thinking the Beretta Tomcat for carry and some sort of 20 gauge shotgun for the home. Budget will also be a consideration.

The shotgun part is actually easier. We use a youth-model Mossberg Mod 500 in 20 ga. that serves very well. (The Boss is about 5-1 in sneakers). It seems easier to work with a too-short buttstock than a too-long one.

However, The Boss carries a purse that really deserves it's own pack-mule, so she stashes an SP-101 in there. I've tried to convince her that that's not the ideal course of action, but it's what she's comfortable with, and it does serve to fulfill Rule #1 of gunfighting. (That may not be what you needed to help your friend pick out a personal defensive handgun.)

The downside to the 20 ga. is that it's sometimes hard to find good HD loads for it, so when you do find some that suit, buy lots of them. We use #4 buckshot in 2 3/4 in. shells, simply because that's what works best in that shotgun. (She used it recently to kill a chicken-thief coyote, and it worked admirably well. Other than the mag tube extension, the only addition is the piece of reflective tape around the barrel, right behind the muzzle.
But there ain't many troubles that a man caint fix, with seven hundred dollars and a thirty ought six."

What about a 357 lever action?

If she has to go with a mousegun, here's one of the best possible choices.

Sphinx AT-380

And the price is right.

Wish I'd kept the one I had.

That'll have to wait until after the shoot. Only pics I currently have of her are from a month before Katrina, when she was nearly eight months preggers. (Or, perhaps, smuggling a soccer ball under her top)
