Trying to find a range for a new shooter...

The place for beginners, or anyone else, to talk about gun, gear, and shooting topics with a minimum of jargon and/or geekery. The only stupid question is the one you don't ask that blows up in your face later.

Trying to find a range for a new shooter...

Post by SoupOrMan »

So, one of the guys I game with online is interested in learning to shoot. He lives in New Hampshire, near Portsmouth. Since I live in Illinois, it's a bit difficult to just pop over for a shooting session. I can't find any public ranges or shops with public ranges in the area (except for the SigArms Academy). Does anyone know any good spots in the Portsmouth area where a guy can go to rent a pistol or rifle and learn to shoot?

Hey hey kids!

I'm about 40 minutes south of Portsmouth, and there's a public range in Salisbury, MA (Bob's Tactical) that's even closer (like 25 minutes).

I'd be more than happy to meet with your friend for a quick gun safety/general range etiquette session and some basic pistol shooting. I have a routine I use for new shooters:

Smith & Wesson Model 17 .22LR revolver
Smith & Wesson Model 422 .22LR semi-automatic
Ruger Security Six .357 Magnum/.38 Special revolver
SigSauer P226 9mm semi-automatic

This gives a basic intro to both wheelguns and semi-autos, starting with the venerable .22 long rifle cartridge for a low-recoil, low noise introduction.

I can be reached either here or via my contact information on my blog, MArooned http://www.stuckinmassachusetts.blogspot.com.

Thanks for thinking of me!

Thanks, man! I'll let him know. I think he's around college aged and all he knows about firearms is what he's learned from Call of Duty 4. He will also be the first to admit that does not make him knowledgeable about real firearms, so he's already learned the "guns aren't toys" thing. I'll send him to your blog when I see him online again, which ought to be sooner rather than later.

Nah, the GPS doesn't give updates on "Stupid brake-rider ahead" or "Soccer mom on cell phone in middle of road"...
