Good AR?

The place for beginners, or anyone else, to talk about gun, gear, and shooting topics with a minimum of jargon and/or geekery. The only stupid question is the one you don't ask that blows up in your face later.

Good AR?

Post by thatguy »

I've been thinking about purchasing a better rifle just in case Mr. O is our next president. So far I'm leaning toward a DPMS Panther Lite-20. I'd just like to know if it would be a good AR type rifle to start with. I would like to have something else, but I wouldn't have any money left over for magazines and ammunition if I purchased it.

If anyone knows of another good rifle under $1,000.

I hope Mr. Du Toit's prediction of seven states becomes reality. I really want an FAL.

AIM Surplus is still showing the 16" Del-Ton for $669.95, though it says they're out of stock at the moment:

You can find good FAL's for under $1000 over at FALFILES. Check the marketplace.

However to stick with the AR vein, I'd recommend picking up an Essential Arms receiver and a parts kit from Model1Sales.

Everybody is into the M-4 platform, and if you need a compact weapon for playing in and around vehicles and inside buildings it's not bad. It's why I have mine. But....

I'd actually recommend either an A-2 or A-3 full size version for most uses.
The longer barrel helps with the velocity/impact energy and is faster for follow up shots.
An A-3 Kit with Gov't profile barrel, and a YHM rear BUIS will run $555 from Model1Sales.
This way you can stick whatever optics you want on it and not have to mess with the carry handle mounts.

Of course if you shop around the Panther-Lite can be had fairly cheaply (on sale $699).
Looks like a nice package and has features I prefer.

Or buy several stripped lowers, and build several to suit. You even have some trading fodder for later.

I don't have an AR, and I bought a stripped lower and a CMMG parts kit from cheaper than dirt.

I have 2 AR's at this time and I am planning on getting a couple of extra stripped lowers esp. if Obamarammadingdong makes it to the White House. I figure I can still get the uppers without too much trouble.

Well, it's time once again for my budget evil black rifle sermon.

BUY. STRIPPED. LOWERS. If you can afford a $1K rifle, and are only doing so because you're worried about an impending AW law resulting from an Obamagasm, buy 10 stripped lowers.
And may I say, from a moral point of view, I think there can be no justification for shoving snack cakes up your action.

That's pretty much why I was looking at the Lite-20. I was going to skip optics for a little while. I don't know much about the subject and I'd prefer sinking any money left over into ammo/magazines.

I'd rather not to go with that option for two reasons:

1. Thinking about me trying to build a rifle usually ends with the mental picture of a chimpanzee trying to put a square peg into a round hole. That would leave me with ten hunks of metal I can't do anything with other than sell/trade. I'd rather have a new rifle that I can shoot.

2. BATFE under Barry O could change it's mind and declare that uppers are firearms as well. Once again that would leave me with ten hunks of metal I can't do anything with other than sell/trade when I'd rather have a rifle I can shoot.

I might consider purchasing a stripped lower depending on how much money I have left over.

Appreciate the information everyone has provided so far.
