pain in trigger finger

The place for beginners, or anyone else, to talk about gun, gear, and shooting topics with a minimum of jargon and/or geekery. The only stupid question is the one you don't ask that blows up in your face later.

pain in trigger finger

Post by chem light »

Anybody else have trouble with this. I don't shoot very often. Maybe once or twice a week about a hundred rounds at a time, but lately when I've started to squeeze the trigger I get a sharp pain in my most distal knuckle.

Suggestions beyond motrin and ice?

I'd wonder at your grip, and how you're addressing the trigger. Might be helpful to have someone with experience check out your grip and such.

You may want to invest in a squeeze toy to exercise your hand(s) and fingers. Of course, I'm not a doctor, so following my advice will be a classic case of "ya get what ya pay for."

Are you feeling the pain during the squeeze for the first shot or for subsequent shots?

Also what kind of gun or does it matter?

During the squeeze. It's done the same thing with my 1911 and my S&W M&P .40. I don't think it's trigger slap.

What part of your finger is making contact with the trigger? Do you have large hands or small hands forcing you to squeeze the trigger in an unusual manner?

Is it the same for rifles and handguns?

Haven't shot a rifle in awhile. I have tiny little girl hands (they match the rest of me), thus only the top pad reaches the trigger, but I've shot like that since I was 17.

I'm afraid it might be overuse. I play guitar, piano, and spend most of my time at work typing, but then all of my fingers should hurt. I don't know. I was guess I was just hoping someone had similar problems and knew how to go about fixing it. Not a fan of going in to see the doctor. (read, would rather wrestle an alligator.) Well, shooting an M9 on Thursday. Guess I'll see how it goes.

Could be carpal tunnel syndrome. Sometimes one of my fingers will suddenly feel like it is being split by a knife, depending on how I hold my hand.

If you have the same problem on Thursday, it may be time to wrestle the alligator.......... (Given that you would rather wrestle the alligator than see your doctor, it may also be time to look for a new doctor ;) )

When I was typing a great deal (law school) I used some expasion bands from ironmind.com. They really helped.
